Cronkite School Wins Grant

Posted on 05/07/10 via Phoenix Business Journal

A five-year grant will bring journalists from around the world to the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Downtown Phoenix beginning this fall.

Each year, nine to 15 midcareer journalists will spend 10 months taking classes at Arizona State University, interacting with students and faculty and learning about American media.

The $1 million grant through the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program is being funded by the U.S. State Department.

This fall, 10 journalists will arrive from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Macedonia, Croatia and China.

The journalists, who range in age from 25 to 50, were chosen based on their leadership and commitment to public service.

“We think it will be great for our students and faculty, just having these accomplished journalists from other parts of the world here,” said Kristin Gilger, Cronkite’s associate dean.

Broadcaster Walter Cronkite, for whom the school is named, had a vision to teach people about the places he traveled to and reported on overseas, said Bill Silcock, an ASU associate professor.

“We are fulfilling, even further, the vision he had of having our students become globally engaged,” Silcock said.
