Calling All Carolers!

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Tenor, Alto, Soprano, Bass, Baritone, or Tone Deaf, CityScape in Downtown Phoenix invites you to bring your singing voice, and your holiday spirit, to the NRG Ice Rink Friday at noon for a “random act of Christmas culture kindness.”

67505_004It’s sorta like a green and red flash mob, minus Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

Thousands of carolers of all ages and talent levels are expected to take part in this mass sing-along of all the holiday favorites from noon to 12:30.  A similar vocal venture was masterminded last year at Scottsdale’s Fashion Square.

Kay Randolph of Scottsdale’s Mountain View Presbyterian Church will lead the cavalry of carolers through all the Christmas classics, capped by a rousing Hallelujah chorus.

After the caroling is done, everyone is encouraged to stay and use the ice rink for $10/each. The fee includes rental valuable coupons for CityScape restaurants and retailers. Caroling, skating and a late lunch perhaps?

Ample parking for this event is available in the CityScape garage at 1st Street and Washington.

Downtown Recycles

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

RecyclingSince 1997, communities across the country have come together on November 15 to celebrate America Recycles Day. More than a celebration, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the United States. One day to educate and motivate. One day to get our neighbors, friends and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when we all work together. One day to make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year.

It’s in that spirit that the Downtown Phoenix Partnership, City of Phoenix, and CityScape have joined forces to roll out a new recycling program for Downtown.

Phase I of the program, which is the brainchild of the Downtown Phoenix Clean Team, was rolled out today with nine bins located between 3rd Avenue to First Street and Washington to Monroe.

The City researched trash bin use to determine which corners had the biggest need. Phase II is expected to begin in December.

“The goal of the program is to increase recycling awareness in and around Downtown,” said Downtown Phoenix Partnership Program Coordinator Jovanna Perez. “Eventually we hope to generate a revenue stream that we can then give back to the community.”

The first phase of unmistakeable blue recycling bins (pictured, left, with Clean Team member Cornelius Victor at the SW corner of Adams/Central) can be found at the following locations:

SE corner of Washington/3rd Ave.

2nd Ave. between Washington and Adams (2)

NE corner of Adams /1st Ave.

NE corner of Adams / 2nd Ave.

SW corner of Adams / 1st Ave.

SW corner of Adams / Central

NE corner of Adams / Central

SE corner of Monroe / 1st St.

3 New Restaurants Opening at CityScape

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

In a little over a year, CityScape has become a magnet for local culinary A-listers and beloved national restaurant chains.

StrandThe strength of the mixed-use development’s pull has never been more evident than with the imminent openings of three more eateries.

Popular Old Town Scottsdale breakfast and lunch spot The Breakfast Club will open across from Gold’s Gym Elite, between Tilted Kilt and the under construction Kimpton Palomar Hotel, on Nov. 14. In addition to the gargantuan waffles, pancakes, and omelets, The Breakfast Club will also serve up specialty coffee drinks from an adjoining barrista bar.

“Fast casual” Italian restaurant The Strand (picture, left) will sling sandwiches, pasta, salads, and Italian fry bread from the corner of Jefferson and 1st Street starting in mid-November. The concept comes from Jimmy Carlin and Maven Hospitality Group, the same folks responsible for Blue Wasabi and The Cajun House. The Strand will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and will also feature beer, wine, plus Bellinis, a popular Venice-born frozen drink that combines sparkling wine and peach puree.

And on Dec. 6, Chipotle will open one of five new Valley locations directly across from Jimmy John’s and Five Guys on the corner of Washington and 1st Avenue.

Urban Grocery Turns Two

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

For the past two years Urban Grocery & Wine Bar has served as Downtown’s local grocery store.

urban_marketTo celebrate, Urban Grocery & Wine Bar invites you to attend a birthday bash coinciding with Phoenix Public Market’s Wednesday Open Market from 4-8 p.m.

The party will feature the unveiling of a new mural that was painted on the west side of the Urban Grocery building by community mural contest winner Joseph “Sentrock” Perez, birthday cupcakes provided by Tracy Dempsey Originals, $3 food truck specials including birthday themed ice cream by Sweet Republic, and a special “wines and wieners” pairing provided by Sand Reckoner Vineyards and Short Leash Hot Dogs. Sounds pretty great, right?

There will also be live music by Dan Sell and a special beer tasting by Sonoran Brewing.

Downtown Phoenix Public Market and Urban Grocery & Wine Bar continue to help galvanize the Downtown community so it’s only fitting that the community come together for this special event. As a special birthday bonus, McKinley Street is open so the public can enter the parking lot from either First Street or Central Avenue.

Zombie Walk 3 Saturday

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Contrary to what you may have heard, Downtown Phoenix is not dead.

It’s undead.

zombieWEBThe Downtown Ambassadors and Arizona Ghostbusters will lead the Third Annual Zombie Walk this Saturday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m. as a part of Rosson House Museum’s Hallowe’en extravaganza that takes place at Heritage Square from 2-10 p.m.

Zombie Walk started in 2009 when the Downtown Ambassadors and some of their friends decided it would be fun to dress up like reanimated corpses and meander through the streets of Downtown Phoenix.

Around 200 people attended that first Zombie Walk. A year later, over 2000 zombies descended on our urban core and Downtown Phoenix had a bona fide Zombie Apocalypse on its hands. (Or is it Zombie-ocalypse?)

“There will be food and music and fun for the kids but Zombie Walk is mostly a time when the zombie race can get together, talk about old times, and chow down on some brains,” said Zombie Ambassador Curtis Leach. “I really like brains.”

Zombie Walk 3 FAQ

Q: How do I dress like a zombie?

A: Here are some pictures from Zombie Walk 2.

Q: How much does Zombie Walk 3 cost?

A: Zombie Walk 3 is free to the public, but canned donations benefiting St. Mary’s Food Shelf are strongly encouraged.

Q: Where should zombies park?

A: Arizona Center has graciously allowed all Zombie Walk 3 attendees to park in their ramp for $5.

Q: What if don’t want to dress up like a zombie?

A: The world needs zombie victims, too.

Zombies will line up at Heritage Square around 5:30 p.m. and the walk, er, limp will begin at 6. Hallowe’en, sponsored by the Downtown Phoenix Partnership, X103.9 FM, Easley’s Fun Shop, Rosson House Museum, and CareScape, features live music from The Relics, The Alchemy Heart, and Checker’d Past, plus makeup artists, Halloween-themed vendors, food trucks, psychics, tarot readers, and much more. For a complete schedule please visit the Zombie Walk 3 web page.

See you Saturday!
