Shop Owners Celebrate 25 Years Downtown

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

John and Kathy’s Shop has been around so long…

* Patriot’s Square wasn’t built

* The Suns were still playing home games at Memorial Coliseum

* Downtown didn’t have a National League West champion baseball team

* Light rail wasn’t even a notion

WEBOf course Patriot’s Square has since been redeveloped as a part of CityScape and light rail buzzes by Chase Field, a new convention center, and US Airways Center.

And through it all, including two moves and a nasty recession, John and Kathy have endured as two of the smiling faces of Downtown, helping workers with everything from flowers and lottery tickets to dry cleaning, postal services, and satisfying those mid-afternoon cravings.

John and Kathy’s Shop, located at Orpheum Lofts (First Avenue and Adams), is celebrating 25 years as Downtown’s go-to convenience shop offering:

* Post Office Services

* Coffee

* Sundries

* Greeting Cards

* Lottery Tickets

* Legal Forms & Kits

* Sandwiches & Snacks

* Cigarettes

* FTD Florists

* Dry Cleaning

“We have formed so many relationships in Downtown Phoenix,” said John. “We have seen young people grow up to have kids of their own. That means something.”

Stop by the shop and ask John and Kathy about their 25th Anniversary gift cards (spend $100, get $20) or visit them on Facebook.

Congratulations on 25 years, John and Kathy!

PARKing Day Sept. 16

Friday, September 9th, 2011

On Friday, Sept. 16, Downtown Phoenix will join cities around the globe in transforming metered central city parking spaces into public parks and social spaces, if only temporarily.

PARKINGDAYThe annual PARK(ing) Day event was born in 2005 by Rebar, a San Francisco-based art and design studio. According to a release by organizer Stacey Champion, creator of the sustainability group Rogue Green, “PARK(ing) Day challenges people to rethink the way streets are used and reinforces the need for broad-based changes to urban infrastructure.”

Phoenix PARK(ing) Day will take place in three different Downtown Phoenix locations:

MORNING SESSION (7 – 10 a.m.)

* Parking meters on the east side of 2nd Street between Taylor and Filmore streets to engage ASU Downtown.
* Parking meters on the south side of Washington Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues, across from City Hall.

EVENING SESSION (4 – 7 p.m.)

* Parking meters on 5th Street between Garfield and McKinley streets in the Roosevelt Row arts district.

“I am happy to have been handed the torch by Yuri Artibise, who brought PARK(ing) Day to Phoenix three years ago,” said Champion in the release. “There is a huge need for green public spaces and pocket parks in our city, increased community involvement, a city plan to reduce urban heat island effect and a concerted effort to at least (temporarily) put better use to our many vacant lots throughout the city.”

According to Champion’s release, PARK(ing) Day 2010 included more than 800 “PARK” installations in more than 180 cities in 30 countries on six continents. This year, the project continues to expand to urban centers across the globe.

There will be teams of community activists, urbanists, workers from Downtown offices, and various organizations.

Get your friends and co-workers together to create your own park on Friday, Sept. 16.

Fair Trade Kitchen Unveils Healthy Lifestyles Menu

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

I don’t live an extremely healthy lifestyle food-wise. I eat Lean Pockets and copious amounts of tuna salad. Plus, I fancy red meat and eat it whenever possible.

So when Michelle Lavis-White invited me to try Fair Trade Kitchen’s new expanded healthy lifestyles menu–featuring homemade and mostly homegrown vegetarian and gluten-free dining options–I was all kinds of skeptical.

As a small-minded Welshman with meat-and-potato roots, I’ve always associated vegetarian dining, let alone vegan and gluten-free, with words like “tasteless,”  “unfortunate,” and “Oh, no thanks, I’m good.”  So imagine my uneasiness when Michele and her chef Ingrid presented me with tofu steaks and tofu cakes, along with sides of carrot salad, quinoa, and peanut pasta. On this overflowing, completely meatless plate, some roasted zucchini and carrots were about the only recognizable fare.

FairTradeFeeling brave and feeling the pressure of Chef Ingrid’s gaze, I dove in without any regard for my taste buds. And after about 15-20 chews I came to a startling conclusion:

This food, vegetarian or not, was really good.

The lentils were spicy, the tofu savory, the peanut noodles creamy and delicious. There was comforting rice and cheek popping carrot salad, all packed with incredible flavors.

“This is a culture shift,” said White, who is part of an ownership group that oversees both Fair Trade locations (Civic Space Park on Central and Roosevelt on First Avenue). “We’re not only preparing good and affordable food, but we’re educating people that what we should be eating is not only good for us, but good for the community and good for the planet.”

The healthy lifestyles menu is being beta tested at the Civic Space Park location but eventually White says the same items will be found at the Roosevelt shop.

White said that in developing the menu it was a top priority to keep the price points in line with budget-minded students, government workers and ASU faculty, so complete meals (like the one pictured above) will be available for between $5 and $6.

In addition to the vegetarian/organic/gluten-free menu, Fair Trade will continue to offer the salads and sandwiches (like the famous chicken curry) longtime fans of the cafe crave.

Fair Trade Kitchen, located on the bottom level of the AE England building, is open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

P Word at Herberger Theater Aug. 27

Monday, August 8th, 2011

Phoenix-based production company Felicia Davis Productions (FDP) announced Friday that poetic sensation Jessica Holter will perform her all-new, one-woman show “Don’t Say the ‘P’ Word” at Herberger Theater Center on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Jessica-Holter-The-Punany-PoetThis show promises to take you on a journey of intense oratorical expression.

Executive Producer Davis has assembled a production cast including local radio personality Karlie Hustle as host. FDP has a signature style of bringing shows that have an eclectic mix of education and entertainment and this show will be no different.

In “Don’t Say the ‘P’ Word,” Holter (pictured, left) expands into the fullness of herself as a producer, writer and gifted orator in a performance that will touch all of your senses. Passionate  and powerful, the show is laced with elements of comedy, poetry and theatrics and full of riveting scenes that will not only entertain audiences but will also make them think.

The script is adapted from the collective works of the author and activist who shocked the world with a HBO feature that put a strangely erotic twist on AIDS awareness. The lawless lover, the humble Christian housewife, and the wholesome hottie all find themselves with an equal stake in a bustling city of words and wisdom, as their tales converge in this witty and thoughtful show about self-love and the laws of urban attraction.

“I’m excited to bring yet another quality production to the Phoenix community for the exclusive purpose of education, empowerment and entertainment,” said Davis. “I’ve worked with Holter in the past and with performances that appeal to a very diverse audience. She has a strong following that spans three generations.

“I’m grateful for the vision and the platform that allows for full self-expression in a unique way that moves the HIV awareness agenda forward.”

Tickets for this one-night-only performance can be purchased at www.herbergertheater.org/dont_say_the_p_word or by calling the Herberger box office at 602-254-7399.
