Rock N Roll Marathon Weekend at CityScape

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

You don’t have to run 26.2 miles to enjoy this weekend’s PF Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in Downtown Phoenix.

CityScape_PF ChangsThe entire weekend will be a celebration of the Big Race–for distance runners, novice runners, never runners, et al–and much of the action will take place in our urban core.

It all starts Friday at 10 a.m. with the opening of the Arizona Health & Fitness Expo, which runs all day Friday and Saturday at Phoenix Convention Center.

For two days, over 60 exhibitors will offer free samples, showcase the latest in running gear, sports apparel, health and nutritional information, and much more.

Pick up some last-minute race essentials before race day and be sure to visit the Brooks Official Merchandise Store. All runners must visit the expo to pick up their race number, swag bag and t-shirt.

Friday evening CityScape is hosting a pre-race party featuring live music from headliner Fitz & the Tantrums and guests Jeordie & The Mixology Project.

Gates open at 5 p.m. with Jeordie & The Mixology going on at 5:30 and Fitz & The Tantrums performing around 7:15 p.m.

Chloe’s Corner (coming soon to the space formerly occupied by Oakville Grocery) will be on hand to help runners carb load and beer will be available for purchase on the plaza. Tickets are $19, or $13.10 when you use promo code RUNNER.  Buy your concert tickets here.

With so much going on in Downtown Phoenix this weekend the events are bound to affect traffic. Here’s a quick rundown on what motorists can expect, along with some helpful alternative routes:

AMA Supercross

The Monster Energy AMA Supercross takes place at Chase Field this weekend.  The following streets will be closed at 9 a.m. on Friday, January 14 through Sunday, January 16 at 6 a.m.:

  • Jefferson St. – closed between 3rd and 7th streets.  Drivers will be directed southbound on 3rd Street to Lincoln.
    Helpful Tip:
    *   This closure may effect your Friday afternoon commute!  To avoid this closure altogether, try to stay west of Central Avenue (see below for Central closure).  Take 1st Avenue south to Lincoln, or take 3rd Avenue north to Van Buren to continue eastbound travel.
  • 4th St. – closed between Jefferson and Jackson streets.
  • Jackson St. - closed between 7th and 9th streets.

PFChangP.F. Chang’s Rock N’ Roll Marathon, Expo and Concert

Also taking place downtown this weekend is P.F. Chang’s Rock-n-Roll Marathon Arizona Health & Fitness Expo at the Convention Center, and concert at CityScape.  Expect 20,000 – 40,000 attendees throughout the day on Friday and Saturday.  The following restriction is necessary to set the stage for the Friday night concert:

  • Central Ave. - closed between Jefferson and Washington streets from 9:30 a.m. on Friday, January 14 through 6 a.m. on Saturday, January 15.  Drivers will be directed to take Jefferson to 2nd Street.
    Helpful Tip:
    *   If you are traveling on Jefferson, you can avoid this closure altogether by using 3rd Avenue to travel northbound.

MLK March

The Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative March takes place on Monday, January 17.  The March begins at 15th and Washington streets at 9 a.m.   Participants will walk westbound on Washington to 5th Street and head north on 5th Street to Hance Park.  Police will be on-site to manage traffic control during this event.  Streets will be restricted only as participants approach and pass by.

For Downtown Pioneers, This Weekend Tops All Others

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

I love my city. I’ve called Downtown home for 10 years. I’ve seen my share of successes and failures down here. (Monroe’s will always hold a special place in my heart.) When I first joined the Downtown Pioneers, the energy Downtown was like a few sparkling grains of sand. You found a grain at the Web Theater, you picked up another grain or two over at the Bentley Projects or Lodo, and on the right night a golden handful at Modified Arts. If you weren’t careful or if the wrong person breathed on it, the sand would blow away, leaving nothing to show for your dedication and no way to prove to  the naysayers that what you found was unique and worth nurturing.

supercrossWell, my fellow Downtown Pioneers, we have our victory at long last! The community we’ve cared for and lovingly nurtured with scraped and bleeding hands has finally come to life. Its energy is palpable, heavy in your hand. You can breathe it in like fresh herbs or your favorite corner restaurant. And we can laugh in the faces of the naysayers as they now scramble for a plot in our beautiful urban garden.

If you would like to experience what I have just described then I say, “No more excuses!” You will not find a better example of what Downtown has become than this weekend, which just so happens to be my favorite weekend of the entire year. Want to know why? Here’s the rundown: The P.F. Chang’s Rock N’ Roll Marathon will bring at least 40,000 bodies Downtown. AMA Supercross will bring another 50,000 inside Chase Field, and another 10,o00 taking part in the FanFest all day Saturday before the racing begins. The Herberger is playing host to one of the best musicals ever written, Ain’t Misbehavin’, and will surely bring another few thousand people Downtown for the last shows of the musical’s wildly successful run. Kathy Griffin is in town at Dodge (5,000 people there), Master Peter’s Puppet Show’s Don Quixote will pack 2,400 into Symphony Hall, Disney On Ice has four shows scheduled at US Airways Center with 9,000 attending each one, and the World Music Festival is bringing two acts and 2,400 people to the Orpheum Theater.

That doesn’t include the great family activites at Arizona Science Center, the Saturday market at Phoenix Public Market, Third Fridays Concert at Civic Space Park, or any of the restaurants and bars that will be spilling over with people.

So… remember that Downtown energy I mentioned earlier?
