Downtown Mardi Gras: Just Deux It

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Pardon my French, but this year’s Downtown Mardi Gras is going to be tres magnifique.

MardiGrasWEBIn a preemptive strike on Fat Tuesday, the practice of eating fatty foods and imbibing before Ash Wednesday and the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, the Downtown Ambassadors and CityScape are hosting a Mardi Gras Festival, Parade, and Mardi Crawl this Friday, March 4, from 6 p.m. into the wee hours of Saturday morning.

It all begins at CityScape, where a wide variety of vendors, street performers, and Mardi Gras-themed attractions will congregate and get the crowd amped prior to the start of the Mardi Gras Parade, which will start on First Street between Jefferson and Madison at 7 p.m. and wind through a two-mile stretch of Downtown en route back to CityScape to re-join the FREE Festival, which will include:

* Live music from Bata Ire, V-Knights, Bad Cactus Brass BandSugar Thieves and show closer Hot Birds.

* Phoenix’s famous food trucks like Short Leash Hot Dogs, Jamburritos and Torched Goodness.

* Artists, CityScape tenants, street performers and vendors selling whigs, beads and other Mardi Gras wares.

* Beer garden to help revelers get appropriately lubricated.

Then, at 9 p.m., the Ambassadors will captain trolleys during a Mardi Crawl through Downtown Phoenix, including pub stops at Rose & Crown, Coach & Willie’s, Seamus McCaffrey’s, Ghost Lounge and Bar Smith.

The Crawl geauxs until 2 a.m., followed by a post-Crawl feast at Steve’s Greenhouse Grill. Due to trolley availability tickets for the Mardi Crawl are extremely limited so make sure you buy your tickets in advance online. $7 gets you a wristband, and $10 gets you a wristband AND post-Crawl breakfast at Steve’s.

Bargainville, population you.

See you Friday!

Zombies to Roam Streets Friday

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

What’s green, blue, red, and tastes funny?

A zombie eating a clown.

This Friday, Oct. 29, citizens of the undead are invited to line up at Heritage Square at 6 p.m. dressed as their favorite brain-craving Zombie for Zombie Walk 2: Bigger! Better! Undead…er.Zombie Walk 2

The Downtown Ambassadors , Arizona Ghostbusters and Broken Bulb Studios (makers of the hit Facebook video game Braaains!) invite you to attend this FREE, family friendly celebration which begins at promptly 6:30 p.m. and will circle back to the park in time for the All Hallows Eve Festival running 5-11 p.m. The All Hallows Eve Festival will feature candle-lit tours of Rosson House, pumpkin carving and decorating, children’s costume contests, face painting, palm readers, cake walk, jump house, silent horror films, gift basket raffle, carnival games, live music, food vendors, fresh brains** and a cornucopia of spooky peeps.

Anyone who would like to have their zombie makeup done by professionals, come down to Heritage Square at 4 and be made undead for as little as $10.

NightmareCROPPEDClaybirdsIf that’s not enough to satisfy your ghoulish cravings, the The Rose & Crown will host A Nightmare on Adams Street with beer garden operating from 7:30 p.m. to Midnight. Admission to A Nightmare on Adams Street is free and the music will be abundant, featuring bands from 7:30-9 (Claybirds have already signed on) then DJ LaRue will provide the soundtrack from 9-12. There will also be a costume contest with prizes and a scary movie (we suggest something by Sam Raimi).

If you’re into Halloween make plans to attend these wickedly fun events in Downtown Phoenix.

And if you want to see just how much the Ambassadors like Zombies, check out these great photos on Facebook and Flickr.

Mardi Crawl with the Ambassadors

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Mardi Crawl is your chance to hobnob with Downtown’s elite.

beadsYou might think of the Downtown Ambassadors as knowledgeable, charming, helpful, and orange–and they are certainly all of those things–but what you probably don’t know is that the Ambassadors are some of Downtown’s most frequently stalked and talked about public figures. In fact, Ambassador Guy gets caught in paparazzi crossfire more often than Mayor Phil Gordon.

0333Sounds like some peeps you’d like to party with, right?

Well, this Friday you’ll have your chance.

Starting at 9 p.m., the Ambassadors will gather outside their swanky Information Center at 101 N. First Avenue (Adams side of the US Bank building) and embark on an epic Mardi Crawl to five of Downtown Phoenix’s most beloved pubs–The Rose & Crown, Seamus McCaffrey’s, Friday’s Front Row, Bar Smith and Coach & Willie’s.

For the unbeatable price of $10 (or $15 night of the event), you can join the Ambassadors aboard Ollie the Trolleys and bump from from pub to pub, taking full advantage of the awesome drink and food specials while chatting up 60 or so potential new best friends.**

Want to join in on the fun? Simply visit this link and submit your payment via Pay Pal. You can pay cash the night of the event but it will cost you an extra $5 and, since space is extremely limited, you run the risk of being turned away. Leaving folks sitting on the curb crying is not the way any of us wants to start the evening so save us all the emotional trauma and buy your seat now, deal?

See you Friday!

**Mardi Gras regalia is strongly encouraged!

Food, Hygiene and Clothing Drives Need Your Help

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Food banks, Goodwill, the Salvation Army and other charitiable organizations accept donations year-round but the need is dangerously high during the holidays, especially in these lean economic times. From canned goods and other non-perishable food items to toiletries, clothing, blankets and toys, less-fortunate families and individuals need your help, not only to have a brighter holiday but in some cases simply to survive. There are several ways you can help, but here are three easily accessible Downtown charity drives that are in desperate need of your attention and generosity:

Downtown Ambassador Food Drive

Those cheery and helpful Ambassadors in the orange shirts hope you’ll think of families and individuals who are less fortunate than you this holiday season and are collecting for the Saint Mary’s Food Bank Nov. 18 thru Jan. 6. In addition to canned good and non-perishable items, the Ambassadors are requesting items that will help the displaced and impoverished stay warm on cold winter nights, including blankets, sweaters, coats, comforters, shoes, boots, thick socks, jeans or any cold weather Soupgear and layering clothing you can spare. You can drop off your donations at Ambassador headquarters (101 N. 1st Ave. #190) or, if you work Downtown, an Ambassador will gladly come pick them up at your office. For more information or to schedule a pick-up, call 602-495-1500.

Hygiene Drive Hosted By Crave Sandwich Cafe

Central Arizona Shelter Services (C.A.S.S.) is requesting much-needed toiletries and supplies in high demand this holiday season. You can drop off shampoo, conditioner, razors, razor blades, shaving cream, liquid body soap and wash, bath towels, deoderant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine hygiene produces and twin bed sheets now thru Dec. 12 at Crave Sandwich Cafe (541 E. Van Buren St.). For more information call 602-257-1616.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Food Drive

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international non-profit organization dedicated to serving the poor and they are currently taking donations for their Thanksgiving Food Drive. You are encouraged to drop off canned goods and other non-perishables at Saint Mary’s Basilica (231 N. Third Street) anytime and this drive culminates during the 9 am mass on Thanksgiving Day Nov. 26. For more information call 602-263-8856.
