Downtown Recycles

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

RecyclingSince 1997, communities across the country have come together on November 15 to celebrate America Recycles Day. More than a celebration, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the United States. One day to educate and motivate. One day to get our neighbors, friends and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when we all work together. One day to make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year.

It’s in that spirit that the Downtown Phoenix Partnership, City of Phoenix, and CityScape have joined forces to roll out a new recycling program for Downtown.

Phase I of the program, which is the brainchild of the Downtown Phoenix Clean Team, was rolled out today with nine bins located between 3rd Avenue to First Street and Washington to Monroe.

The City researched trash bin use to determine which corners had the biggest need. Phase II is expected to begin in December.

“The goal of the program is to increase recycling awareness in and around Downtown,” said Downtown Phoenix Partnership Program Coordinator Jovanna Perez. “Eventually we hope to generate a revenue stream that we can then give back to the community.”

The first phase of unmistakeable blue recycling bins (pictured, left, with Clean Team member Cornelius Victor at the SW corner of Adams/Central) can be found at the following locations:

SE corner of Washington/3rd Ave.

2nd Ave. between Washington and Adams (2)

NE corner of Adams /1st Ave.

NE corner of Adams / 2nd Ave.

SW corner of Adams / 1st Ave.

SW corner of Adams / Central

NE corner of Adams / Central

SE corner of Monroe / 1st St.

Central Station Opens

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

After a year of construction, Downtown’s Central Station reopened Monday offering increased comfort, coolness, and color.

Central_StationWEBBus and METRO light rail passengers can stay out of the sun thanks to larger shade trees and oversized fabric canopies and bike lockers, corner kiosks, and night-time lighting were also added.

The transit center’s sustainable features include: solar energy, light-emitting diode (LED) lights, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and programmable irrigation.  According to a news release, the City is pursuing certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Existing Building Operation and Maintenance (EBOM) as one of the first refurbished buildings for the city.

1997-built Central Station hosts 10 Valley Metro local bus routes, two express bus routes, and METRO light rail service within the property as well as houses Customer Service staff and Police Transit Bureau staff.  The $3.7 million design and reconstruction project was funded by a grant from the Federal Transit Administration through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Kini Knudson, deputy public transit director for the City of Phoenix, told the Phoenix Business Journal that increased area traffic from light rail and ASU Downtown made the improvements to the station necessary.

“With the changing context of Downtown, we wanted to get in line with how Downtown was redeveloping,” Knudson said. “There are more than a thousand buses that go through the site each day, so it’s our central hub.”

Passenger amenities include:

•    Air hose to inflate bike tires

Irwin, Fairbanks Among DREAMR Winners

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

The 16th Annual DREAMR Awards were held Monday afternoon at the Phoenix Convention Center, where R. Neil Irwin received the Visionary Award, the highest honor given.

DREAMR with dateDREAMR stands for Downtown Revitalization Effort Awards of Merit and Recognition and honors the individuals, projects and organizations that dare to dream and work to make those dreams come true. Thanks to DREAMRs, urban blight and decline have been replaced with new centers of retail and commerce, urban residential opportunities, and an active arts and entertainment community. Because these DREAMRs followed their dreams, crowds of people are returning to a renewed and invigorated Downtown Phoenix.

Irwin, a partner at Brian Cave LLP, was the only Chairman the Downtown Phoenix Partnership had known during the organization’s first 20 years of operation prior to stepping down earlier this year. He played a key role in both the revitalization of Downtown and the development of the Partnership. In 2009, Irwin was named one of The Business Journal’s 25-Most Admired Top Level Executives.

Also receiving DREAMR Awards were: Tom’s Tavern owner Mike Ratner (Private Sector Individual); Don Keuth (Public Sector / Non-Profit Individual); Phoenix Mercury (Organization); Freeport McMoRan Center (Project); and former Phoenix City Manager Frank Fairbanks (”Unsung Hero”).

In addition to awarding the DREAMRs, the event also spotlighted Best of Downtown winners and featured two captivating keynote speakers, Local First Arizona Executive Director Kimber Lanning and Alliance for Audience Executive Director Matt Lehrman. Both offered up simple ways everyone can help raise the profile of Downtown and grow local business. You can watch Lehrman’s speech here and here, and you can watch Lanning’s speech here and here.
