Spring Fling Pub Crawl Saturday

We interrupt this blog post with an important news bulletin: You have one more day to purchase discounted advance tickets to Saturday’s Spring Fling Pub Crawl. ”So what?” you might ask. Fair enough, smart guy, but if you don’t buy your tickets online before midnight Friday you won’t receive $3 off the day-of price of $15 (nor will you get the additional $2 off by entering promo code “2OFF” — wink, wink).

Quick math: If you save $3 or more on  your ticket that’s money for at least one additional drink–a drink you could buy to help win the affections of a fine-looking lass or strapping young buck.

The Spring Fling Pub Crawl is a trolley guided tour of 17 bars and restaurants in Downtown Phoenix, including Seamus McCaffrey’s, Coach & Willie’s, Hanny’s, Carly’s, Turf, and newly added Lost Leaf and The Roosevelt. You and a few hundred of your new best friends will experience Downtown’s hiptastic bar scene while enjoying exclusive drink and grub specials along the way. When: Saturday, May 15 with check-in starting at 8:30 p.m.

Who: All peeps 21 or older.

Why: Because we all love talking smart and grooving out with new friends at Downtown haunts holes like BarSmith, The Rose & Crown, Hanny’s, Majerle’s, 1130 The Restaurant, Friday’s Front Row, Stoudemire’s, Kincaid’s, Ghost Lounge, Steve’s Greenhouse Grill and Bentley’s.

How: Easier than saving 15 percent on your auto insurance. Either buy your discounted ticket online or buy night of when you meet up with us outside the Ambassador Information Center (Adams / 1st Ave.) between 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. From there, Ollie the Trolley will be whisking us from pub to pub to enjoy exclusive drink and food deals. Once we’ve crawled as far as we can, we’ll all head over to Steve’s Greenhouse for a special late-night breakfast.

Weekend Forecast: Mostly Sunny With a Chance for Awesome

As I write this post it’s 52 degrees.

52!

That’s a New England basement, not Downtown Phoenix.

Worry not, fellow Downtowners. If you believe our local weather prognosticators, the generally poopy weather that has plagued us this week will soon be moving out  to make way for the glorious sunshine and highs in the mid-70s we’re accustomed to.

Which is fortunate, because Downtown is blessed with a treasure trove of fun things to do this weekend.

THURSDAY

chelsea-handlerComic, late-night talk show host, author, vodka lover and self-appointed floozy Chelsea Handler skewers celebrities, friends and family alike in a show at Dodge Theatre.

Since we’re talking about weather, Class 6 Theatre presents It’s Always Sunny In Phoenix, three short plays by award-winning playwright David Ives, who has been making people laugh for 15 years.

FRIDAY

Kobe Bryant and the detestable Lakers bring Showtime to the Valley for a tussle with Steve Nash, Grant Hill, and that Stoudemire fella Suns fans should be thankful the team didn’t trade away for 50 cents on the dollar.  

Actors Theatre Company presents Secret Order, a bio-medical psychological thriller about an upstart scientist on the verge of curing cancer. Intrigued? Read Downtown Blogger Liz Fichera’s review here.

SATURDAY

People of all fitness levels can head to Civic Space Park for Personal PowerTraining Boot Camp with trainer Scott White at 6:30 a.m. or 7:30 a.m. Boot Camp classes are $10 a person, with multi-class packages available. If you’d rather not go the Biggest Loser route, check out the FREE Community Yoga Project that happens at 10 a.m. every week. Just bring a yoga mat or towel.

Want a part-time job working for the 2010 Census? Representatives will be recruiting workers at the Phoenix Public Market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. While you’re there, grab a Caramel Addiction brownie from Sherrye’s Kitchen.

The finest amateur pugilists in Arizona will be on display at Alice Cooper’stown for Independent Events’ Olympic Style Boxing at 2 p.m.

SUNDAY

Rained out last weekend, the Wheels of Britain car show has been rescheduled for Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Heritage & Science Park.

Adam awakes one morning to find himself alone and locked in a strange, sterile room with four beds.  One by one, three more people join him – but nobody knows why they are there. Want to know more? Go see Indivisible at the Herberger at 2 p.m.

There’s no better place to wind down a weekend than at District American Kitchen, where on Sundays bottles of red and white wines are half-priced.

Downtown Lite

It’s time to man up, grit our collective teeth and forge ahead with our New Year’s Resolutions on diet and health. I’ve talked to restaurant managers across Downtown Phoenix to find healthy options for dining out, which you’ll find listed below.

First, to make sure I’m giving you some good basic advice, I’ve sought out the diva of diet, the queen of culinary do-right, Oprah herself. While she doesn’t always follow her own advice, Oprah does have terrific medical advisors, including Dr. David Katz, a world-renowned specialist in nutrition. Here are a few key tips from Dr. Katz and other specialists:

Make half of every meal fruits or vegetables. This way, you get enough nutrients and you automatically reduce the number of fat and calories you consume. Just watch out for fatty dressings and toppings.

Be sure to limit sugar, eat high-fiber carbs like whole wheat bread, and include some healthy proteins in every meal – like eggs, chicken, fish or beans – to help you feel full and stay on your plan. Another good tip: keep the ingredient list short in the foods you eat or the items you order. Longer lists usually equal more sugar, salt and calories.

OK, enough nagging. Here are some suggestions for eating lite Downtown:

Sonoma Casual Dining

If Dr. Katz were here, he’d give these guys a gold star. Their breakfast-all-day menu includes fresh whole grain crepes with fruit and a build-your-own omelet bar. Choose the veggie omelet and ask for egg whites or egg substitutes. Another great choice is the grilled chicken breast and steamed broccoli dish, the perfect diet lunch. If you prefer, Sonoma will even cook your food with PAM instead of butter. [Editor's Note: The Breakfast Joynt has taken over breakfast at Sonoma and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Thai Elephant

The Imperial Veggies dish is an excellent option. You can add tofu for protein and choose brown rice over white rice for a higher fiber content.

First Watch

At First Watch, they’ve made it easy to pick out the healthiest item on the menu. It’s called Not Guilty. A whole-wheat tortilla encloses this veggie wrap, which includes a side of hummus.

If you want something filling, order the salmon at the Hard Rock. It comes with a side of broccoli and mashed potatoes, but they’ll be happy to substitute something healthier for the spuds.

Hanny’s

The Beet Salad is seriously healthy. Big slices of gorgeous red and yellow beets, topped with either gorgonzola or goat cheese – hey, there’s your protein – are accompanied by fresh greens with a lemon vinaigrette.

Coach & Willie’s

The Chicken Italiano might be your best bet. It’s a grilled chicken breast topped with fresh mozzarella and roma tomatoes. A tasty and very filling lunch, high in protein and low in carbs.

District American Kitchen and Wine Bar

Light and delicious, the Baby Arugula Salad is made with heirloom tomatoes, pine nuts and fresh mozzarella. Order the sweet basil dressing on the side, and use it sparingly.
