Take the Downtown Phoenix Strategic Vision Survey

Monday, March 14th, 2011

At the end of 2004 the Phoenix City Council approved “Downtown Phoenix: A Strategic Vision and Blueprint for the Future”.  An enormous amount has been accomplished in just this short time.  Six years later, with about 4 years left in the 10 year timeframe for the  plan, we want to revisit it to determine what stakeholders like yourself feel we should concentrate on given the current economic situation and limited resources.

skylineBelow is a link for a survey about the plan and possibilities for moving forward.  It reviews the seven themes of the original plan and possible modest changes to them as well as items to focus on for the remaining 4 years.  We are not looking to re-write the plan but simply determine where people would like to see energy focused.  If you are interested in seeing a spreadsheet of every goal that was in the original plan and a status update please email me at dnoble@downtownphx.org.

The survey will take about 10 minutes and will give us a better sense of what is important to people who are so vested in downtown.

So Much Happening Downtown

Monday, October 11th, 2010

PHX 20 Year GraphicThis week is packed with great events both large and small. In fact, there are so many great things to do in Downtown Phoenix that there is a new look to the What’s Happening Weekly.

We had to go bigger, and in this case bigger means better. There were simply too many great events to fit in the usual format so the newest edition is four pages chock full of the fun stuff to do Downtown.

This week our featured event is the Downtown Phoenix Partnership’s 20th Anniversary Celebration! In fact, Arizona Center and the Herberger Theater Center also turned 20 this fall so to celebrate these occasions the DPP is hosting a not-so-little shin-dig this Friday afternoon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., closing down Adams Street between 1st Ave. & Central to give everyone plenty of room. There will be live music, nearly 70 restaurants and businesses, street performers and more – all to thank you for your support as Downtown has grown over the years. You love downtown, and we love you right back!

Look for your favorite Ambassadors to lead the way. Ollie the Trolley will be on hand, too, with one and only trolley host Gary on board. (If you’ve spent anytime Downtown at night you may recognize Gary’s booming voice from, “hey folks, you need a ride?”).

There is one more bit of exciting news I am happy to impart to you: Phoenix Urban Grocery and Wine Bar is expanding its hours. Starting tomorrow, their new store hours will be 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. With the new expanded hours they will be offering quick and healthy breakfast items from their delicious Market Cafe. If you haven’t been there yet, I can’t think of a better way to start a morning than with tasty local fare and amazing coffee from Royal Coffee Bar. The Urban Grocery and Wine Bar, Market Cafe and Royal Coffee Bar are already hotspots for lunch and dinner so whether you’re eating in or taking out, know that your purchasing dollars were well spent at a local business helping to sustain our neighborhood and our tummies. And that REALLY does your heart good. Get out and go have a good time Downtown!

We’ll see you on Friday!

Downtown Phoenix Partnership Hosts Stakeholder Forum

Monday, July 5th, 2010

On June 29 the Downtown Phoenix Partnership hosted a stakeholder forum at the Downtown Sports Grill in the Collier Center.

pro-skylineThe lunchtime event brought together building representatives and security personnel and featured a presentation by Dave Roderique, President & CEO, and Terry Madeksza, Vice-President of Operations, detailing the organization’s current efforts to improve the Downtown experience.

The Partnership is coordinating the installation of a comprehensive wayfinding system, including both pedestrian and vehicular signage.  The installation marks the culmination of an extensive design process and is sure to make traveling Downtown much easier.  Along with wayfinding, the Partnership is engaged in various other streetscape improvement projects including new LED uplights, rehabilitating irrigation and electrical systems and painting the trashcans and benches silver.  The presentation also included comments from Lt. Jeff Lazelle of the Phoenix Police Downtown Operations Unit, who highlighted the low crime rate and efforts to curb panhandling and property crimes.

Dave Roderique updated the group on the progress of several major Downtown projects, including the Health Science Education Building, the County Court Tower and the Freeport McMoRan/Westin Center.  On the verge of the biggest retail investment in Downtown Phoenix history, the area will soon welcome a CVS Pharmacy, Lucky Strike Bowling Lanes, Oakville Grocery, Urban Outfitters and more than 12 new restaurants when the retail portion of CityScape opens this fall.  Already more than 80 percent of the office space has been leased and Gold’s Gym has opened for business.  The latter half of 2010 promises more excitement as restaurants and businesses open and the pedestrian environment is enhanced.

5 Ways to Get People Thinking About Alternative Transportation Downtown

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Downtown Phoenix is coming alive with new businesses opening up in our urban core – all of them are easily accessible using the light rail.  However, in some cases you might want to combine more than one mode of alternative transportation (a bike, a taxi, etc).  Doing so will help you enjoy the many restaurants and coffeebars that Downtown has to offer.  Recently, over on my blog, I talked about ways the light rail improved the quality of life in Downtown Phoenix.  While the light rail has helped, there still needs to be more awareness about other things people can do to drive less and truly help green the city.

Bike rentals or a bike rental kiosks in various parts of Downtown would be hot.  Right now, the nearest bike rental facility is either way south of Downtown or on the east side of the airport. This is why we need a bike rental kiosk in our urban core.  Tucson is trying out a bike kiosk and so are a handful of other major cities around the country.  Why not here?  True, there was a bike sharing program in Phoenix at one time, but people kept stealing the bikes.  A rental program in downtown would encourage people to leave their cars at home, or at least encourage people to take the train into town and rent a bike once they’re here.  You can seee the Tucson bike kiosk story here.

bike_racksBike racks are lacking in many parts of Downtown.  Copper Square and the Downtown Phoenix Partnership have a good supply in the heart of Phoenix, but  we need more and lots of them throughout the rest of Downtown, midtown and uptown.  Secure areas to park our bikes will encourage more people to bring their bikes into town.  Many cities across the country are finding there are federal funds to pay for racks if the location meets city ordinances.  Recently, I pointed out how restaurants along the light rail are seeing green by installing new racks on their own.  See a previous story I wrote on the bike racks in Downtown Phoenix here.

Zipcar, a car sharing program, has cars in most major cities including right here in Phoenix.  Zipcar is an hourly car rental service has several location in the Phoenix market, mostly around the three Arizona State University campus locations.  They’re inexpensive when you use the cars for short trips like running errands, and can get more expensive when you rent them for longer periods of time.  There’s even an iPhone app for convenient reservations.  I realize the service and concept is relatively new for many people, however I don’t think enough people know about this service, especially when I tell people and their reaction is ‘what’s a Zipcar?’   If that’s your’re question too, read more here.

Curbside taxi service at light rail stations apparently is not allowed to offer service to and from a light rail station. If they were, think of how easy it would be to get to the airport or to a baseball or basketball game from the various park and rides along the light rail line.

Pedicabs are a quick and easy way to get around in the center of town.  Not only are they a green form of transportation, but the pedicab drivers and the carts add character to downtown Phoenix.  I took a ride on one the other night and found out how many hundreds of pounds each one can haul.  Read more, plus get the number to call a pedicab here.

The city of Phoenix has come so far in such a short amount of time when it comes to promoting alternative transportation.  As you can see from this list, there’s still more work we can all do to get people out from behind the wheel of  a car.
