Your 7-Day Suns Planner

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Last week in this space I discussed the Suns’ schedule, and how much more difficult December’s opponents are collectively than, say, October’s or November’s.

That entry didn’t mention the New York Knicks but perhaps it should have.

December got off to a rocky start for your favorite pro hoops squad as the Suns (14-5) were thoroughly humiliated by Mike D’Antoni’s Knicks 126-99 at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday. Danilo Gallinari, David Lee and Al Harrington dominated Phoenix in the low post and the Suns–held below 100 points for the first time this season–were out-run-and-gunned by their old coach’s new (and far-less talented) team.

tyreke-evansFortunately, there’s no time to mope about Knicks loss because a) the Suns still own one of the NBA’s best records; and b) tonight they visit their old pal Shaquille O’Neal, LeBron James and the 12-5 Cavaliers. Since opening the season at 0-2 the Cavaliers have ripped off 12 wins in 15 games and once again find themselves at the top of the Eastern Conference standings.  The Suns were swept by Cleveland in last year’s two-game season series with Mo Williams averaging 37 points in the two Cavs victories. Steve Nash has averaged 25 points in his last three games against Cleveland. (Update: The Suns lost 107-90.)

Here’s the rest of the Suns’ week ahead:

Saturday vs Sacramento

At 8-8, the Kings are one of the league’s most pleasantly surprising teams due in large part to rookie point guard Tyreke Evans, who is averaging nearly 18 points and 5 assists a game. If you’re looking for a reason to come down to US Airways Center and see the game in person, Evans stands out on the marquee. He was Rookie of the Month for November and his oversized 6-foot-5 frame, ball-handling skills and court vision remind some of a young Magic Johnson.

Sunday at Los Angeles Lakers

Ugh. Playing Kobe and Co. at Staples Center is never a good time, as evidenced as recently as Nov. 12 when the Suns were discarded by the Lakers 121-102. This game is significant for a multitude of reasons, none more important than the head-to-head tie-breaker should the two teams end the season tied atop the Pacific Division. It’s a 7:30 p.m. start, which means you might want to head out to a sports bar so you can watch both the Suns and the Cardinals, who host the Vikings on Sunday Night Football. Here’s a list of the best places Downtown to watch a game.

Tuesday at Dallas

It’s always fun when Nash reunites with his BFF Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks but the last time the Suns were in Dallas (April 5) they were fighting for a playoff spot and got blown out on national TV 140-116. Nash loves playing his old team and has averaged 23 points and 11 assists in 26 games (including postseason) since signing with Phoenix but he won’t be the only player on the court facing his old team. Former Suns’ All-Star forward Shawn Marion has found a home with the Mavericks and is averaging 12.7 points a game, third on the team behind Nowitzki (27.2) and Jason Terry (17.8).

Phoenix Mercury Playoff Excitement Tonight!

Monday, September 28th, 2009

58496183Can you feel it?  It’s playoff time downtown!

The Mighty Phoenix Mercury are in the second round of the WNBA’s Western Conference Playoffs.  We have beat San Antonio in the first round, and we are ahead one in the series against the LA Sparks.  There are two games left in the series, both of which will be played here at US Airways Center.  We Mercury fans are sure that our team can take it all the way to the Finals!

If you’ve never been to a Mercury game, you are really missing out on the amazing energy – both of the players and the crowd.  The level of play is intense.  The team is averaging – yes, averaging – 100 points per game in the playoffs.  We have one of the top 3 Point percentages in the league, and the Mercury is not afraid of running down the court for fast breaks on what feels like 8 out of every 10 plays.  The team is exciting.

The crowd, referred to as the X-Factor, is amazing.  One game recently with almost 7,000 attendees was roaring like a crowd 10 times that size for the full last five minutes of the game to help keep the team pumped for a very close finish. While I must admit to being a bit prejudiced in loving my particular section since I’ve been sitting there for 13 years, I think wherever you sit you’ll find a great mix of devoted fans – young and old.  Ticket prices for the Mercury games are absolutely one of the best values in Phoenix professional sports, so it’s easy to bring the kids or go as a group of friends without breaking the bank.

For those of you who may be Suns fans and aren’t sure if you would love the Mercury the way I do, let me share with you that when Phoenix Suns head coach Alvin Gentry was asked to comment on the Phoenix Mercury he said, “They’re a better team. I think it’s the personnel they have and how they try and play.”  Both Coach Gentry and several Suns players are regular attendees at the games.  If the Suns enjoy watching the Mercury – then I’m sure you will too.

Editor’s Note: The Mercury advanced to the Finals!! The next game is Sept. 29 at US Airways Center, so get your tickets now!

Meet the Mercury: Tangela Smith & DeWanna Bonner

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Tangela Smith of the Phoenix MercuryAs the 2009 Phoenix Mercury season begins, hopes are high that the team will return to championship status—and a 8-4 start is a good way to get the ball rolling. Returning eight starters and a rookie phenomenon in DeWanna Bonner, the chemistry is obvious. The bond and sisterhood they have makes them successful on and off the court, leaving their destiny in arm’s reach. With three players averaging double digits in scoring and two others with nine points a game, the Mercury will surely stay on the winning side of the conference.

And here’s two of the Mercury’s best: 12-year veteran Tangela Smith, the center from Iowa; and rookie sensation guard/forward DeWanna Bonner from Auburn. Did you know that Tangela Smith is third all time in games played, fourth all time in field goals and seventh in points and rebounds? Her numbers alone are Hall of Fame worthy. And then there’s the fact that she has won four championships (in Korea, Turkey, China and Phoenix). We might have the best player ever in women’s basketball right here in Downtown Phoenix in Tangela Smith.

And now DeWanna Bonner. Did you know this rookie guard/forward is averaging 16 points and 11 rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench? Pretty big numbers from the 21-year-old. One of her teammates was quoted as saying that she is a “young Kevin Garnett.” With all that passion and talent, I see a lot of years of Bonner domination ahead.

As this championship run begins, there would be no better time than now to jump on board for this emotional rollercoaster we call basketball. It will be a magical ride and I will be there for every stop. Hope you’re there with me.
