Stress-Free Ways To Entertain Relatives

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Will you feel joy, a rush of nostalgia or the urge to pull out every last hair on your head? If your relatives are coming for the holidays, you’ll probably feel a little of each. To keep your hair firmly on your head, though, here are some suggestions to keep your family busy and happy while reducing stress and spending.

Suggest a hotel.

NutcrackerYou love your family, but if the space in your home is limited, suggest one of downtown’s hotels. There’s the sleek, modern Wyndham, which has undergone a $20 million renovation, and the always-dependable Hyatt Regency downtown. The Hyatt is home to the Compass, the revolving rooftop restaurant that out-of-towners will love for its panoramic views and fairly fabulous food.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Sheraton as an option. At the holidays, there’s a bonus plan: the 1st Annual Gingerbread Competition, which showcases creations from downtown chefs. These edible, two-foot high houses will be part of an entire winter village, complete with elaborate trains. If your visitors include kids, Santa Claus will be showing up for a big photo-op.

Then again, maybe your family would prefer a more unusual, historic spot. In that case, check out the Hotel San Carlos. It’s an official state historic landmark, and the only historic boutique hotel in the city.

Completed in 1928, the San Carlos played host to a lot of Hollywood stars. In fact, some of their most luxurious suites are now named for the stars who stayed there, from Mae West to Cary Grant. Speaking of their rooms…oh my gosh, I love their rooms. In contrast to the modern chic of the Wyndham, the San Carlos offers irresistible old-world charm.

Take advantage of freebies.

On November 27th, Civic Space Park will offer a free showing of the movie, “The Great Debaters” at 7:30 pm. Bring chairs, hot chocolate, and you’re all set.

December 4 from 6 pm to 10 pm, the Target Free First Friday offers free admission to the Children’s Museum of Phoenix. The kids will burn off all that treat-fueled energy and you can check out Artlink First Fridays, which is also free.

Pick one or two big holiday events.

Knowing that all of us have tight budgets these days, it’s tough to take a big family to all of the really splashy holiday events. But, if you can swing it, check out Ballet Arizona’s magical Nutcracker, December 11-27 at Symphony Hall. Or, get tickets to another Phoenix favorite, A Christmas Carol, a spectacular musical presented by Actors Theatre.

Third Annual Downtown Phoenix Pub Crawl

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

0341Math isn’t my friend. It’s barely an acquaintance. But even I can do the math on the Phoenix Pub Crawl: 15 restaurants and bars for $12 per person. When you break it down, that comes to…80 cents per bar.

That’s crazy good. Your $12 ticket includes live entertainment, munchies and special prices on drinks, only available to Pub Crawl participants. Serious suggestion: Get $2 off your tickets now by ordering in advance and entering the code “2off”. Be sure to get your tickets in advance; the price goes to $15 the day of the event.

The Third Annual Downtown Phoenix Pub Crawl starts at 4th Street and Garfield on Friday, November 13th. It goes from 9 pm until 3:30 am, ending at an after-hours breakfast spot. Free trolley buses are on hand to move you to and from different locations.

Wondering which bars are participating? Here you go:

Welcome to Zombieland

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

ZombiesWhen I was a kid, my brother and I would root through our Halloween candy after a fierce night of trick or treating to identify the best of the stash. In short order we downed our favorite treats and entered…Zombieland – a mythical place brought on by a combination of hard candy, chocolates and post-Halloween excitement. The feeling was a bit like to listening to Johnny Cash sing “Sunday Morning Coming Down” – bitter, but sweet nonetheless.

So, it was with great happiness that I learned about this year’s “Zombie Walk” starting at Heritage Square in front of the Arizona Science Center at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 30. To have the chance to roam the streets of downtown moaning “brains” without being arrested is something to be excited about. After all, this is a chance to re-live the Zombieland of my youth without feeling like I’m going to spew an assortment of candy corn at any given moment. Plus, there’s always the possibility that the entire parade could re-enact the “Thriller” video in tribute to M.J. or at least give a gentle nod to M.J. Fox’s “Teen Wolf.”

These Zombies are organized. They even have their own My Space page where you can check out the details. The walk will start up at 6 p.m. and parade through downtown ending at Friday’s Front Row at Chase Field. Oh, and it’s free too.

Save the Dates: Downtown Phoenix Annual Pub Crawl and PAPA Parade

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

PAPAblogAs if the Zombie Walk isn’t enough, now there’s two great events to look forward to after Halloween. For those of you who may have missed them last year, this is your chance to sample some great beers and express your inner creative urge and parade through the streets of Downtown Phoenix.

The Third Annual Downtown Phoenix Pub Crawl will kick off on Friday, Nov. 13 at Fourth St. and Garfield starting at 9 p.m. until closing time. Over 12 pubs, bars and restaurants are participating – offering several tasty brews. This year, Sonoma Casual Dining will be featuring a special after-hours breakfast starting at 1:30 a.m. to help soak up the suds.

Now in its fourth year, Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts (PAPA) takes place on Sat., Nov. 14 starting at 5:00 p.m. ”The Worlds Only Parading Arts Fair,” as it has become known, gives all members of our community the opportunity to express themselves through costumes, art, and performance while marching together through the streets of Downtown Phoenix. Everyone is invited to walk, ride, dance, or crawl along in the parade.
