Downtown Pub Crawl

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Join 800 or so of your new best friends on a tour through Downtown Phoenix’s emerging bar scene during the 4th Annual Downtown Phoenix Pub Crawl, happening Saturday, Oct. 23.

PubCrawlInsiderAfter wooing a record-750-plus crawlers to our Spring Fling Pub Crawl in May we broke another record this fall by signing 19 (!!) pubs, clubs, lounges, restaurants and bars to participate, including brand new CityScape hot spot Lucky Strike Lanes.

If you’re unfamiliar with how a Downtown Pub Crawl works, here’s the Cliff Notes version: Buy an advanced ticket online for $12 or pay $15 the night of the Crawl. Check-in and wristband distribution will take place beginning around 8 p.m. directly outside the Downtown Ambassador Information Center on Adams Street between Central and 1st Ave. Then, at 9 p.m., crawlers will jump onto trolleys and be whisked away to the select saloons, each one offering drink/food specials exclusive to Downtown Pub Crawlers.  The list of establishments we assembled for this year’s Crawl is truly fantastical and includes chill pubs like Seamus McCaffrey’s, Rose & Crown, Turf and Carly’s, swankier lounges like Hanny’sIcon and Bentley’s, plus several places you can dance like nobody’s watching including District American Kitchen, Ghost Lounge and BarSmith.

10 Pub Crawl _whiteThe party will press on until bar close (if you’re good), at which point everyone is invited back to Steve’s Greenhouse Grill for an after-hours breakfast/dance party/recovery featuring a DJ spinning the hits from midnight to 3 a.m. Steve’s did a great job hosting the late-night breakfast this past spring. If you don’t believe me, watch the video footage.

Need a safe place to crash? Our good friends over at Hotel San Carlos are offering Crawlers a discounted room rate of $89+tax. That’s a screaming deal if there ever was one.

Best Mexican Food Downtown

Monday, July 26th, 2010

There are many benefits to living in Phoenix and one of them is easy access to some of the best Mexican food on the planet. (I lived in Russia for 2.5 years and went through Mexican food withdrawal. Once I got my hopes up when I found a restaurant called Ла Кукарача, La Cucaracha, but was bitterly disappointed when every dish turned out to be just lavash covered in melted Russian cheese. For this Arizonan boy, those were the longest 2.5 years of my life.)

verdeWhat’s the point to all this you ask? The point is, my dear friends, that excellent Mexican food is heaven on earth and Verde on Garfield and 2nd Street serves up some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever had. Possibly the best Mexican food ever served up in this city. Ever.

First of all, they make their own tortillas on site and they are served warm and full of buttery goodness. I can easily eat, and I’m not exaggerating, 30 billion tortillas in one sitting. I love those tortillas and if I could marry them I would and we’d live happily as man and tortilla.

The red chili beef and green chili pork are my favorite dishes, each one bursting with spice and flavor and when wrapped in one of my beloved tortillas with some fluffy rice and beans, it becomes the food of the gods. The guacamole is also divine.

Verde does not yet have a liquor license, but I’ve been told it’s in the works.

Bottom line Verde is consistent in their quality, they are local, and the food is fresh and affordable. Another major win for Downtown Phoenix.

What To Do When It Hits 100

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Summer has officially arrived, and with it comes the urge to hide in the house with the A/C on full blast. I hope you resist the urge, because there are all kinds of ways to keep your cool Downtown.

world cup2010 World Cup Watching

This year’s World Cup takes place in South Africa, which is the first time Africa has hosted these global games. That’s big stuff, and so is the first-ever World Cup match-up between USA and England. The games start this Friday, June 11th and Downtown has several official locations for watching the action (yes, there’s actually a World Cup Soccer Bars Directory for Phoenix. Who knew?)

To see guys use everything but their hands to score, head for Alice Cooper’stown or Majerle’s 9-Lounge. Another prime viewing spot has to be The Rose & Crown Pub, since no one loves soccer quite like the Brits. Knock back some Guinness or any of the pub’s many imported or domestic beers to keep from losing your cool.

Third Friday Art Reception

Next Friday, June 18th, local artist Mhelanie Banzon Silao will be featured at a Third Friday art reception. Using lengthy exposures, Silao’s amazing photography captures multiple light sources in one shot. See “Captured Light: Light Paintings” from 6:30 pm to 9 pm at the Artlink Heritage Square Gallery.

Movies, Movies, Movies

While I admit that I do the whole Netflix thing, I still prefer sitting in a dark, crowded theater with a box of popcorn and a sense of anticipation. Three blockbusters are currently playing at the AMC Arizona Center 24 theaters, including IronMan2, Robin Hood and the Prince of Persia, plus Get Him to the Greek, starring the hilarious Russell Brand.

Cocktails at Hanny’s

This sleek, upscale restaurant/bar specializes in all kinds of spirits. Their Midnight Martini gives you the chance to sample one of their signature drinks in a small size for only $2.50 (after midnight, of course). Hanny’s serves food till 1 am 7 days a week, and last call at the bar is at 1:30 am.

Spring Fling Pub Crawl Saturday

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

We interrupt this blog post with an important news bulletin: You have one more day to purchase discounted advance tickets to Saturday’s Spring Fling Pub Crawl. ”So what?” you might ask. Fair enough, smart guy, but if you don’t buy your tickets online before midnight Friday you won’t receive $3 off the day-of price of $15 (nor will you get the additional $2 off by entering promo code “2OFF” — wink, wink).

Quick math: If you save $3 or more on  your ticket that’s money for at least one additional drink–a drink you could buy to help win the affections of a fine-looking lass or strapping young buck.

The Spring Fling Pub Crawl is a trolley guided tour of 17 bars and restaurants in Downtown Phoenix, including Seamus McCaffrey’s, Coach & Willie’s, Hanny’s, Carly’s, Turf, and newly added Lost Leaf and The Roosevelt. You and a few hundred of your new best friends will experience Downtown’s hiptastic bar scene while enjoying exclusive drink and grub specials along the way. Here’s more of what you’ll need to know:

PubCrawlerInsider2What: Spring Fling Pub Crawl

Second City Has Arizona Pegged

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

The opening number declares that Arizona is perfect, nothing is ever wrong in Arizona, well, except for those times when things are not perfect and when things are wrong.

If you appreciate good satire and are in the mood for laugh out loud entertainment, get tickets to see Second City Does Arizona or Close But No Saguaro. Second City is a comedy group, so this isn’t a show with a main character and a beginning, middle, and end. It’s a sketch comedy show, like watching Saturday Night Live, only funny.

Most of the sketches (but not all) are related to Arizona culture and politics. (They even sang a rap song about
javelinas!) The writers of the show were in town in January scoping out our fine city and state and they spent time in Phoenix and Tucson.

They mined some comedy gold and wrote sketches that poke fun at some new Arizona laws, McCain, Brewer, speed cameras, snow birds, the summer heat, life in Sun City, and even a jab at Alice Cooper.

All the actors really shine in improvisation. (As they should, it’s kind of what the Second City is all about.) The actors took one woman up on stage and convinced her to run for Governor, and in accordance with Clean Election Laws asked the audience for 250 $5 checks (they got $15!) then asked the unsuspecting volunteer a few questions. Based on her answers the actors made a political commercial, then a smear campaign before our very eyes. One of the final sketches was built around some ideas the audience yelled out: Queen Creek, a parent-child relationship, and the phrase “You’re so pretty.” I still chuckle when I think about the hilarious situations they managed to make with those ideas.

I left the theatre feeling jolly and giggling to myself as I walked over to Hanny’s for a drink.

Late Night Eats Under $10 Along the Light Rail

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

There may not be a late night greasy spoon diner near the light rail, but there are plenty of other places to eat which are open until at least midnight in Downtown Phoenix.  Now keep in mind, this is Phoenix and we’re coming out of a recession.  Our choices are few, but at least we have some. For the purposes of this blog post, my definition of late night is a) open until at least midnight and b) the restaurant must have meat, chicken or fish on the late night menu.  And of course, each restaurant is a quick walk or bike ride from the light rail.  Enjoy your late night eats!

Hannys_exteriorHanny’s (Washington station) – The former department store turned contemporary restaurant has three dishes under $10. One is a margherita pizza, another is a snack plate, and the last one is a bar plate.  The snack plate consists of prosciutto and sopressata.  Add melon to the snack plate and you’ve got the bar plate. Hanny’s also has $5 martinis. The kitchen cooks until 1 a.m. You can find Hanny’s at the corner of 1st Street and Adams in Downtown Phoenix.  Kudos to the restaurant for putting light rail directions on their Web site here.

The Turf Restaurant and Pub (Central station) – The Irish pub has delicious wraps for under $8 and is open until midnight on the weekends. I like the Buffalo Chicken Wrap and their French fries are pretty good too!  Turf is located on 1st Street – see the menu and location information here.

NINE 05 (Roosevelt station) – The modern Asian fusion restaurant has a selection of dumplings, crepes and buns at $10 – including my favorite bbq pork belly with hoisin glaze.  NINE05 is open ’till midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.  More information on their menu and other events during the week can be found here

PastaBAR (Central station) – The italian eatery is nestled in the middle of restaurant row on 1st Street behind Turf and Sens.  PastaBAR has the latest hours on this list – and of course, we love that! Even better – PastaBAR has a $10 menu complete with a selection of pasta entrees that come with a side.  PastaBAR does late night right in Downtown Phoenix!  Need more information?  Click here.

Sens (Central station) – Another 2 a.m. restaurant on restaurant row in Downtown Phoenix. Sens has an Asian tapas menu so most of the items are under $10 – my favorite is the spicy won ton with sauteed chicken and pepper jack cheese. Honestly, though, you really can’t go wrong at Sens – everything is delicious!  Need more information or reasons to visit?  Click here.

Now that we’ve covered late night eats, let’s talk about places to have dinner on Sunday nights over here.

Information on riding the light rail can be found here.

More Than a Martini

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

It’s been awhile since I’ve enjoyed $5 martinis at Hanny’s. Much too long. Sitting at the stainless steel bar Hannyslast weekend reminds me of how much I enjoy this ultra-modern-but-not-too-hip spot on Adams and 1st Street. Surrounded by windows and the remains of department store glamor, I couldn’t help but smile brighter amid the candle light and wonderfully mixed background music, and order that second martini (which was amazing, by the way). Frequented by locals and working-stiffs alike, a night begun at Hanny’s remains open to infinite possibilities.

Downtown Lite

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

It’s time to man up, grit our collective teeth and forge ahead with our New Year’s Resolutions on diet and health. I’ve talked to restaurant managers across Downtown Phoenix to find healthy options for dining out, which you’ll find listed below.

First, to make sure I’m giving you some good basic advice, I’ve sought out the diva of diet, the queen of culinary do-right, Oprah herself. While she doesn’t always follow her own advice, Oprah does have terrific medical advisors, including Dr. David Katz, a world-renowned specialist in nutrition. Here are a few key tips from Dr. Katz and other specialists:

Make half of every meal fruits or vegetables. This way, you get enough nutrients and you automatically reduce the number of fat and calories you consume. Just watch out for fatty dressings and toppings.

Be sure to limit sugar, eat high-fiber carbs like whole wheat bread, and include some healthy proteins in every meal – like eggs, chicken, fish or beans – to help you feel full and stay on your plan. Another good tip: keep the ingredient list short in the foods you eat or the items you order. Longer lists usually equal more sugar, salt and calories.

OK, enough nagging. Here are some suggestions for eating lite Downtown:

Sonoma Casual Dining

If Dr. Katz were here, he’d give these guys a gold star. Their breakfast-all-day menu includes fresh whole grain crepes with fruit and a build-your-own omelet bar. Choose the veggie omelet and ask for egg whites or egg substitutes. Another great choice is the grilled chicken breast and steamed broccoli dish, the perfect diet lunch. If you prefer, Sonoma will even cook your food with PAM instead of butter. [Editor's Note: The Breakfast Joynt has taken over breakfast at Sonoma and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Go check 'em out.]

Thai Elephant

The Imperial Veggies dish is an excellent option. You can add tofu for protein and choose brown rice over white rice for a higher fiber content.

First Watch

At First Watch, they’ve made it easy to pick out the healthiest item on the menu. It’s called Not Guilty. A whole-wheat tortilla encloses this veggie wrap, which includes a side of hummus.

hard_rock_cafe-003Hard Rock Café

If you want something filling, order the salmon at the Hard Rock. It comes with a side of broccoli and mashed potatoes, but they’ll be happy to substitute something healthier for the spuds.

Hanny’s

The Beet Salad is seriously healthy. Big slices of gorgeous red and yellow beets, topped with either gorgonzola or goat cheese – hey, there’s your protein – are accompanied by fresh greens with a lemon vinaigrette.

Coach & Willie’s

The Chicken Italiano might be your best bet. It’s a grilled chicken breast topped with fresh mozzarella and roma tomatoes. A tasty and very filling lunch, high in protein and low in carbs.

District American Kitchen and Wine Bar

Light and delicious, the Baby Arugula Salad is made with heirloom tomatoes, pine nuts and fresh mozzarella. Order the sweet basil dressing on the side, and use it sparingly.

Eight Restaurants You Should Try Along the Light Rail

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

People who live and work in Downtown Phoenix near the lightrail are discovering more options lately when looking for a place to eat in our urban core. Entrepreneurs are taking advantage of great opportunities to  snatch up real estate and sling their brand of specialty dishes near the transit system.  I’m ecstatic about the news and I know other people here in CenPho are as well.

In honor of Buy Local Week, I wanted to share a list of eight new restaurants you should try along the light rail.  I recently learned the importance of buying local: 45 cents of every dollar stays in Arizona when you buy local as opposed to only 13 cents at a national chain. (source: Local First AZ)  My list below is an ecclectic mix of restaurants, coffee bars and even a grocery store. Some are perfect for a casual outing with friends while others are great for an intimate dinner for two in our desert oasis.  Either way, these businesses are helping to build a better and more vibrant downtown.  Don’t see one of your favorites on the list? Tell us yours by posting a comment below.

Nine I 05

I’ve been telling friends that Nine I 05’s modern asian fare is lick-your-plate good.  I know, not appropriate behavior anywhere let alone this particular location, but I realized why I had this urge when the server brought my dessert.  I figured out every dish had a standout sauce. Not alot of sauce, just a little drizzle to keep your tastebuds wanting more.  Everything from the crispy duck and foie to the pork belly buns to the blueberry mochi cake was lick your plate good.  (And no, I didn’t)  Somethings you should know about Nine I 05 has intimate seating, a spacious patio, an smaller portions in a relaxed yet classy setting.  This is a place you want to take your out of town friends to show them a good time.  Go stylish, leave satisfied. You’ll probably spend approximately $30 per person without drinks. Hannys See the entire menu here.  Directons from the Roosevelt Station: walk or bike eastbound on Roosevelt to 5th Street and head south a couple of blocks to 905 5th Street.

Royal at the Market

Great coffee, cool atmosphere and a good location.  Royal at the Market moved from their space near the courthouse to the brand spanking new Phoenix Public Market (see below).   What I love: the coffeebar is like a hidden treasure for locals, tucked away behind the PPM with an alley side entrance.  I know, sounds weird, but it’s really the coolest spot for a coffeebar.  The best part: Royal roasts their own beans.  If you like oatmeal raisin cookles then you’ll love the ones at Royal.  Wanna meet for coffee?  Take Central Station north to PIerce, hang a right, and go half a block.  Royal is inside the Phoenix Public Market or walk in through the alley entrance on the west side of the building.

Phoenix Public Market

I love this place.  The Phoenix Public Market  is a gourmet grocery store full of locally grown or produced items.  The market has a variety of healthy choices like organic fruits, vegetables and bread.  However, I normally hit the freezer where my favorite locally made ice cream is waiting.  The M&M candy apples are also high on my list of guilty pleasures.  Those looking for something more substantial should try the pre-made sandwiches.  Getting hungry?  Use the same METRO station and directions above.  Find out more informaiton about the market here.

Fair Trade at Civic Space Park

I like to park my bike, grab a chai tea latte, and take my time heading back while enjoying the view of the coolest art feature in the entire Valley. (Civic Space Park on Flickr)  Don’t get confused: Fair Trade also has a second (and original) location one stop north at Roosevelt and Central.  In the mood for more than coffee?  Try their curry chicken salad during lunch.  Also a favorite: Fair Trade’s coffee cake. Enjoy the great weather on the Zen patio – a quiet retreat right smack in the center of the 5th largest metropolitan city in the country.  Fair Trade at Civic Space is just north of Central Station, underneath the A.E. Building on the eastside of the park.

Two Hippies Breakfast Joint

The owners of a Phoenix burger joint by a similar name are now giving foodies one more good option for breakfast when sadly there are few.  Two Hippies serves a breakfast bowl which you can customize by selecting from a long list of add-ins that ranges from basics like bacon to something more bold like sun dried tomatoes. (At least bold for me because I’m more basic when it comes to breakfast.) I went with my friend Amy and we both pigged out on bowls, bread pudding and a side of deep fried pickles. (The restaurant serves breakfast during the lunch hour as well.)  The bowls are made to order and the place is typically packed so do the math and be prepared to wait. The meal is worth it.  This Two Hippies will require you to hoof it a ways – the restaurant is seven blocks east of the Indian School station so it’s best to bring your bike.  Head westbound on Indian School, then right on 7th avenue the restaurant is about 1/2 a mile north on the west side of street.  An ATM is on site at this cash only business. The exact address is 4306 N 7th Avenue.

Sapna Cafe

Sapna reminds me of a sleek cafe you would find in Europe, only sitting in the heart of our desert playground on lower Grand Avenue. The area is one of my favorites in town.  The lower Grand Avenue neighborhood saw some rough times over the last 10 years and is currently going through a revival.  Artists are building a name here and there’s buzz the tech community wants to establish roots as well. People love the food, especially the vegan options at the little cafe in the pie shaped building.  See a sampling of the menu on their Facebook fan page here.  This is another place you’ll want to bring a bike.  Deboard at Central Station and head westbound on Van Buren to 7th Avenue, continuing northwest on Grand Avenue to the corner of 13th Avenue,

Breadfruit

Breadfruit brings Jamaica and the flavorful spices used in the Caribbean to the downtown district.  Items on the menu here have a kick to to them: spicy here is not like Southwestern spicy most Americans taste in Mexican food.  Not to worry, Breadfruit takes care of their wimpy guests (like me) with a selection of tasty Jamaican beverages such as a pink grapefruit drink to help guests manage the experience. The result:  truly wonderful!  Don’t let the spice scare you away.  Deboard at Central Station and head north past Civic Space park to Pierce and turn right.  The restaurant is on the north side just past 1st Street.  Find more information here.

Hanny’s

The building alone is a reason to try Hanny’s, which sits in an old department store.  When you’re not enjoying one of their signature drinks or pizzas, be sure to check out the elevator shaft or the restrooms.  The restaurant owner turned the dressing room waiting area and stalls in individual bathrooms. The sophisticated and contemporary dining room atmosphere is a great place to entertain out of town guests or even small groups. The restaurant is another one on my list where you could easily spend about $20 to $30 per person.  A short walk from the Washington and Central station, just head north to the end of the platform and then east on Adams to 1st Street.  Hanny’s is on southwest corner.

One new restaurant I left out, and only because I haven’t been, is Hula’s Modern Tiki. Hula’s is on my radar though so I plan on going soon. If you need a map of the METRO rail system here in Phoenix click here.
