Sex and the Second City 2.0 Opens to LOLs

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Sex and the Second City: Version 2.0 worked out the bugs during a final dress rehearsal Wednesday night at Herberger Theater Center and while the performance wasn’t perfect, it was certainly funny enough to convince me it will do very well during its 10-date stint in Phoenix.

SATSCSkewering online dating and the impersonal nature of interpersonal communications in the 21st Century, a cast of four sprinted through two acts that no doubt left both single and spoken for audience members questioning their romantic fates.

SATSC 2.0 uses a JumboTron-sized iPhone and a fictional online dating service called iLove to set the pace and you’ll be surprised who Second City landed to play the role of iLove’s spokesperson. There’s plenty to talk about but little I want to give away so I’ll simply give you a list of 10 things to look for:

1. Fabio

2. The Awesomeness of Kirk Hanley

3. Gratuitous Charlie Sheen joke

4. Local rock legend Alice Cooper

5. Joe Jackson

6. A strange ode to Falconry

7. METRO Light Rail

8. Medieval Times

9. The “Wipe Away”

10. Warrant

Also, you’ll want to pay close attention to the iLove profile photos shown throughout the show.

Go see Sex and the Second City Version 2.0. It’s a fairly dead-on look at the absurdity of finding love in the Digital Age.

[Note: Sex and the Second City Version 2.0 is NOT child-appropriate. Leave the little ones at home.]

Rattlers, Sex and the Second City Return

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Ever since last year’s The Second City Does Arizona, Or, Close But No Saguaro packed its bags and mosied on down the road, fans have been jonzing for another dose of Second City’s acerbic takes on contemporary life in America. Fortunately for us, the troupe has returned to the Herberger Theater Center for Sex and the Second City Version 2.0, which opens Thursday and runs through March 20.

Sex and the Second City Version 2.0 is billed as a “look at the perils of love and relationships in the digital age.” No shortage of materials there, and considering this is the same group that produced some of comedy’s biggest stars of the last quarter century–giants like Bill Murray, Steve Carrell, Tina Fey, and Stephen Colbert–there promises to be a whole lot of LMAO’ing from the crowd.

To purchase tickets for Sex and the Second City Version 2.0 or other Herberger productions enter visit the venue’s web site here.

Canstruction at CityScape

Downtowner and avid blogger Daisy Anderson sent us this note about Canstruction, happening March 5-12 at CityScape.

canstruction-at-cityscapeHello to my Downtown urban compatriots!  You know how it feels at about 3:00 p.m. when you’re at your desk and your stomach starts to rumble? Of course, you can just go to your favorite desk drawer and dip into a snack stash (Weight Watcher’s bars, Snickers for the “special days,” or “borrow” something from your neighbor’s desk while he or she isn’t looking) to satisfy that urge.  Or you can order pizza delivered for the office and be the big hero of the day!

But what about the people that can’t do that because of  A. Lack of money; B. Lack of money; or C. you get the point!

Here’s your chance to change that tune and catch a little stardom!  Just go to www.phxcanstruction.com and show your talents.  A can for mankind with your can-do attitude!  Ok, I’m out of bad rhymes, but this is such a great idea and we urban types need to jump on board.  What “Can” you do? Make me proud people!

Thanks Daisy!

Wheels of Britain Car Show

Ten Chimneys: A Play Within A Play

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Saturday night, the Arizona Theatre Company brought romance, comedy, and drama to the Herberger Theatre. Set during the 1930’s and the 1940’s on a beautifully rotating stage, Ten Chimneys gave us a slice of the private life for two Broadway legends, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, at their country home in Genesse Depot, Wisconsin.

10_chimneysCommissioned by the Arizona Theatre Company and written by the nationally acclaimed playwright Jeffrey Hatcher, Ten Chimneys offers a look at the private lives of artists who are always on the stage. During the Two-Act play, Lunt and Fontanne decide to perform Chekhov’s masterpiece, The Sea Gull. When a young actress named Uta Hagen arrives, a romantic triangle begins to mirror the events in Chekov’s play about passion and art.

Oh, la la!

The dialogue is snappy and the acting is first-rate. Steve Hendrickson (Lunt) and Suzanne Bouchard (Fontanne) not only channeled the famous couple but they looked like them too. They were fabulous.

Ten Chimneys is not a what but a where. Lunt and Fontanne would retreat to their Wisconsin estate, which they dubbed Ten Chimneys, every summer. It had become an actors retreat for them and many of their artistic friends like Noel Coward, Helen Hayes, Laurence Olivier, and Vivien Leigh. During the 15-minute intermission, be sure to head out to the lobby to look at the old photographs of Lunt and Fontanne and their beautiful home. Today, Ten Chimneys is opened to the public as a world-class house museum and a national resource for theatre, the arts, and even the art of living.

Ten Chimneys will run through March 6 at the Herberger Theatre Center. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the Arizona Theatre Company Box Office at www.arizonatheatre.org.

Sacred Places To Open Herberger Art Schedule

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

Sacred Places, the first art exhibit of 2011 at the Herberger,  opens Saturday, Jan. 8,  from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. and will be on display through March 27.

Copen - Archway to the PastSounds like some pictures of churches doesn’t it?  Well not according to Jim Covarrubias, the new curator at the Herberger.

Hozo means “sacred” in the Navajo language.  Covarrubias says sacred can be the rose garden in your back yard or the mountain you hike or the spot in your living room next to the fire looking out over the humming bird feeder.

“Sacred is a place that allows someone to be private and connect with their soul,” says Covarrubias.  He wanted this collection at the beginning of the New Year to let artists share their private spaces and connect with the viewers.

Covarrubias wants the viewers to question why they need art.  What can art give us?  What do people consider to be the benefit of art in their lives?

Neslen - Time Passages 1You don’t just buy a painting because it fits on that blank wall, do you? Perhaps in some way the artists have communicated with you what is sacred to themselves and the paintings speak to your own feelings.

Of course having the newly renovated Herberger Gallery to display these paintings by 22 hand-picked artists makes the exhibit all the more sacred.

Everything you’ll see is available for purchase and a portion of the proceeds goes to support the Herberger Theater Center and its mission of growing the performing arts in Phoenix.

Tequila, Ballet and 300 Cats

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

The holidays are in full swing in Downtown Phoenix with a plethora of classic performances and events that are sure to get you into the spirit of the season, beginning tonight at 7 p.m. with KTAR’s 25th Annual Christmas Carol at Orpheum Theatre. An all-star cast retells the classic tale in old-time radio fashion. Get to the theater early (doors open at 6 p.m.) and enjoy Dickens-inspired carolers.

mariachiYou can get into spirits of a different kind Saturday and Sunday at the Phoenix Tequila Fest and the 19th Annual Christmas Mariachi Festival, both at US Airways Center. While the all-day tastings and margarita challenge are obvious huge draws, there will also be food from Macayo’s, Dos Gringos, La Parrilla Suiza, and America’s Taco Shop. Mariachis provide Saturday evening’s entertainment and Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers close the festival on Sunday with a 6 p.m. concert. Don’t forget that your event ticket gets you a free ride to and from on METRO light rail and the Sheraton is offering a special $89 room rate to festival goers. Call 800.325.3535 to make reservations.

winterventionMidwest and East Coast transplants can get their winter fixes in a couple of ways: CityScape’s skating rink is open daily 3-11 p.m. (over 1,000 people laced up their skates last weekend alone) and Warren Miller’s Wintervention makes its yearly stop at Orpheum Theatre Wednesday evening  at 8 p.m. Narrated by skiing legend Jonny Moseley and celebrating its 60th year, Wintervention’s HD visuals will have you hugging your snowboard.

iCollaborative presents That’s What Christmas Means, an all-new holiday cabaret playing Dec. 9-22 at Herberger Theater Center. Shows start at 8 p.m. but you can come down early and enjoy the nightclub setting of the Kax Stage.

Ballet Arizona presents Ib Andersen’s The Nutcracker Dec. 10-26 at Symphony Hall. It’s Ballet Arizona’s 25th season sharing this wonderous tale and to celebrate they’ve amped up their production with sets but Carey Wong and costumes by Fabio Toblini.

The Downtown Ambassadors will host the second of three Festive Fridays this week at Arizona Center. Not only will there be free music by Soul Power and food by your favorite Arizona Center restaurants like 1130, Sam’s Cafe, and My Big Fat Greek Restaurant from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., but retailers will be on hand to help you with your holiday shopping.

catsFinally, while it has absolutely nothing to with the holidays, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the 18th Annual Phoenix Feline Fanciers Cat Show, happening Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Phoenix Convention Center’s South Building. Think Best In Show, only for cats, with over 300 “fancy felines” competing for kitty gold. Many vendors will be on hand selling cat clothes, scratching posts, gourmet food, jewelry, and probably a whole mess of stuff you can’t imagine let alone dream you could buy.

ENJOY!

Holidays at the Herberger

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

After the turkey, what to do with your loved ones?

OK, you’ve eaten everything on the table and you’ve watched all the football any human ever could and company is still there. Now what?

You’ve been saved by the Herberger Theater! Put on your sweater and take the folks to see a plethora of entertainment!

There’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom for the jazz fanatic, starring renowned recording artist Jevetta Steele as Ma, which runs through Nov. 28, or perhaps a little Lunch Time Theater cabaret show, A Dreamer’s Holiday at The Kax Stage, starting Dec. 7.

Of course, the holiday season wouldn’t be complete without the classic Nutcracker by Ballet and Friends which runs Nov 26-29.

All this close to the light rail and in your own backyard! What a great city we are in with all this growth in the arts right under our noses.

Go out and support it Phoenicians. I’ll see you there!

Ma Rainey Not Just About Music

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Saturday night, the Arizona Theatre Company brought Pulitzer and Tony Award-winner August Wilson’s powerful Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom to the Herberger Theatre. Set in 1927 at a rundown Chicago Paramount recording studio during one very difficult day, the audience got a slice of what life must have been like for the unapologetic and determined Ma Rainey, “Mother of the Blues,” and her quartet of hard-working musicians.

Ma_RaineyThe play is a gripping drama which takes a look at the price of fame, discrimination, the African-American experience and professional jealousies. The audience gets an eye-opening view of how hard Ma Rainey had to have fought for every ounce of respect during a time when the odds were nothing but stacked against her. Even so, the play was as much about Ma Rainey’s quartet of musicians as it was about her own struggle. As the play unfolded, the audience learned about their stories, dreams, and inner demons as their lives connected—often colliding—during their day at the Paramount recording studio. Very quickly, we realized it wasn’t just about the music. In fact, the play contained very little music.

The cast consisted of a ten-member ensemble of actors, each with a long list of credits. My favorite line from the play? When Ma Rainey says, ”You don’t sing to feel better. You sing because that’s a way of understanding life.” My favorite part? At the end of the first act, Levee, the quarter’s horn player, shares a gut-wrenching story from his youth that had the audience so rapt with attention that you could hear your own heart beat.

If you can, see the play with friends so that you can discuss it afterwards.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom contains mature language and themes. It runs at around 2.5 hours with a 15-minute intermission. The play will run through November 28 at the Herberger Theater Center. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the Arizona Theatre Company Box Office at http://www.arizonatheatre.org/
