Downtown Lowdown

Monday, February 14th, 2011

We’ve reached one of the best stretches of the year in Downtown Phoenix. The weather is idyllic, the Diamondbacks and the rest of the Cactus League will soon report for Spring Training duty, and there’s no shortage of great events happening right here in our city’s core. Here are just a few of this week’s highlights:

Body Worlds & The Brain

Gunther von Hagens’ famous exhibit features more than 200 authentic human specimens–including entire bodies, organs and transparent body slices–to form the most awestriking walking health sciences class in the world. Daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday 5:15-7 p.m.

spamalotSpamalot

From Eric Idle, the deranged mind who brought the world Monty Python, comes this Tony Award-winning musical chronicling the adventures of King Arthur, Sir Lancelot, Sir Dennis, and the Knights Who Say “Ni!” Orpheum Theater Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., Sunday 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Ten Chimneys

In this lavish Arizona Theatre Company comedy, we discover what every Broadway star already knows – that the real drama on stage happens when the curtain is down. It is the late 1930s, and Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, the two most revered stars of the Broadway stage, have decided to perform Chekhov’s masterpiece, The Sea Gull. But first they must retreat to ‘investigate’ the play at Ten Chimneys, their legendary Wisconsin estate, where they are surrounded by actors, family and hangers-on. When a young actress named Uta Hagen arrives, a romantic triangle begins to mirror the events in Chekhov’s play about passion and art. The result is a funny, poignant and revealing look at the private lives of great artists who never really leave the stage. Herberger Theater Center Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Alice In Wonderland

This is your last week to see Valley Youth Theatre’s presentation of Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s tale. And at $20 a pop, VYT continues to be one of the Downtown’s best stage values! Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., Sunday 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Food Truck Friday

Downtown’s latest food craze happens every Friday at Phoenix Public Market (peep the Market’s fancy new web page), where from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the finest mobile vendors in the city turn the parking lot into a bodacious food court offering everything from cajun burritos and gourmet hot dogs to authentic barbecue and rockin’ grilled cheese.

Third Fridays

In addition to several Downtown art spaces being open late to the public, Third Fridays events include Emerging Artists at Hard Rock Cafe, 3rd Annual KYSS Dance-a-Thon, Third Friday Latino Style at ALAC featuring “Madonnas, Saints and Sinners,” Live Fridays at Seamus McCaffrey’s and Live Band Karaoke at Friday’s Front Row. A3F4Almost Famous Film Festival Kickoff Party

At 5 p.m., hundreds of aspiring filmmakers will congregate at Majerle’s, where they’ll receive everything they need to shoot a short film: a single line of dialogue, a prop, a theme, and 48 hours to make some magic. For more information on this awesome event read Downtown Blogger Daisy Anderson’s preview of the event here.

Marrakesh Night at Children’s Museum of Phoenix

The Children’s Museum’s annual fundraising gala always offers an evening of fun and food and this year is no different as the museum will be transformed into a Moroccan-style bazzar. 7-11 p.m.

Alabama Symphony Led Zeppelin #4.jpgThe Music of Led Zeppelin

“Kashmir,” “Whole Lotta Love,” “Thank You,” “Stairway to Heaven,” “Heartbreaker,” and “Since I’ve Been Loving You,” are just a few of the classic Led Zeppelin songs featured in this touring production that gives classic hard rock a symphonic treatment. Comerica Theatre 8 p.m.

But wait, there’s more!

Be sure to check out the AAA Arizona Travel Show, EPIK Dance’s Common Ground, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.

Have an amazingly fun and safe week, Downtowners!

Downtown Concert Calendar

Monday, January 24th, 2011

gaga2Over the last two decades Downtown Phoenix has grown up to become Arizona’s epicenter for not only business and government, but for sports, arts and culture, dining, and live entertainment.

In Comerica Theatre, US Airways Center, Orpheum Theatre, and Hard Rock Cafe, Downtown boasts the highest concentration of big-time music venues in the Valley. Don’t believe me? Well, take a gander at these acts coming into Downtown:

(Note: For ticket information please visit livenation.com)

JANUARY

1/26 – Ozzy Osbourne, Comerica Theatre

Just when you think the Prince of Darkness is going to retire to a nice dungeon in the country, he reclaims his pop culture relevance. (See current radio hit, “Let Me Hear You Scream.”)

1/29 – Jacob Tyler Lucas with Aisleview, Hard Rock Cafe

FEBRUARY

2/5 – Blessed Production Presents Donnie McClurkin, Orpheum Theatre

2/5 – Pawl, Hard Rock Cafe

2/11 – Sarah McLachlan, Comerica Theatre

Best known for songs like “Possession,” and “I Will Remember You,”  not to mention her integral role in launching the Lilith Fair music festival back in the 90s, this Grammy Award-winning singer and avid animal rights activist has recently helped produce some incredibly sad TV commercials for ASPCA.

2/11 – Art Laboe’s Valentine’s Super Jam, US Airways Center

2/11 – Fight the Quiet, Hard Rock Cafe

2/12 – The Other 49:  Final Show, Source Victoria, Tugboat and Factories, Hard Rock Cafe

2/19 – The Music of Led Zeppelin, Comerica Theater

Considering Zeppelin’s catalog is largely symphonic anyway, this production makes too much sense not to happen yearly. Here’s what I wrote about The Music of Led Zeppelin last year.

Linkin-Park2/28 – Linkin Park, US Airways Center

Lead singer Chester Bennington is a Phoenix native and I find a way to listen to “Waiting for the End” at least once a day. So should you.

MARCH

3/2 – Hillsong United, US Airways Center

3/4 – Jackson Browne, Comerica Theatre

Cooler than the other side of the pillow, Jackson Browne promises to entertain the crowd with his laundry list of hits, including “Jamaica Say You Will,” “Running On Empty,” and the 80s-tastic “Lawyers In Love.”

3/26 – The Pink Floyd Experience, Comerica Theatre

Totally a must-see for any self-respecting fan of The Floyd, man.

3/26 – Lady Gaga, US Airways Center

She’s only the biggest star on the planet.

janet-jackson-concertAPRIL

4/8 – Janet Jackson, Comerica Theatre

We ran a Facebook poll to gauge your favorite Janet Jackson song and amazingly, 13 different tracks were submitted, none of them matching my personal favorite.

4/15 – Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks, US Airways Center

Oh, Stevie Nicks, how I love thee. Fleetwood Mac is the truth but for my money it doesn’t get any better than “Edge of Seventeen.”

JUNE

6/16 - Rush, US Airways Center

Canada’s finest export since ginger ale.

6/30 – New Kids On the Block and Backstreet Boys, US Airways Center

A perfect storm of screaming by adult women who love boy bands.

Chance of Rain but No Chance of Boredom

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

I’ve  had a great time splashing though the puddles over the last week. I find the rain fun, but what I really enjoy is being in a community where the rain can’t stop me from doing the things I love. One of the main reasons for my move to Downtown Phoenix 10 years ago was the easy access to my favorite social and entertainment interests. My first night in my new apartment I looked over my balcony railing and read, “MOBY, TONIGHT” on the marquee of the Web Theater. At that very moment I knew I had made the right decision. If my friends thought I was crazy, well they could go right ahead a think that because I will be in Downtown Phoenix at a MOBY concert.

Alabama Symphony Led Zeppelin #4.jpgDowntown Phoenix has so many different ways to entertain yourself and satisfies so many different interests, that at this moment I couldn’t imagine myself living anywhere else in the Valley. I would not be able to experience the crowds of the World Series or the annual Mexico vs. (fill in blank) soccer game from my patio.

The Orpheum Theater is one of the most beautiful historic theaters in the country, with the original Wurlitzer Organ still intact and in use, and host to a wide variety of performances like Defending  the Caveman or Riverdance and other Broadway performances. Not to mention all the local artists who perform there because it is so accessible and affordable. The Dodge Theater brings in countless great acts like Alicia Keys, Kathy Griffin and The Blue Collar Tour. Alice in Chains and  the Pink Floyd Laser Light Spectacular play in February and this week I can enjoy the music of Queen and Led Zeppelin with a rock band and full orchestra.  Moreover, I can walk there!

monsterjamThe Herberger Theater and Symphony Hall are home to many of my favorite theater companies. The Arizona Opera who performs La Boheme’ this week, Ballet Arizona with Sleeping Beauty coming up in a few weeks, Arizona Theater Co. who just brought in Ain’t Misbehaven’ and will bring in Second City at the end of the season. How about Actors Theater, who brings in great comedy like Triple Esspresso and Pulitzer Prize winning shows like Shipwrecked, which plays through the end of this week.

I am not super huge on sports, but being in the middle of a high energy crowd at the Suns games or our two-time world champions, the Mercury, can give you a great feeling of intensity that I love. Supercross and, this weekend, Monster Truck Jam, are seen every year at Chase Field, and the Diamondbacks bring in millions during the summer, giving you a year-round experience.

There are so many great things to do that it isn’t humanly possible to attend everything. But I challenge anyone to try, for even if you fail you win.
