Comedian Kevin Hart at Comerica Theatre June 4

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Comedian Kevin Hart will bring his new “LAUGH AT MY PAIN” tour to Downtown Phoenix’s Comerica Theatre on June 4.

kevin_hartHart’s career is definitely on the rise with appearances in a number of high-profile movies such as Soul Plane, The 40-Year Old Virgin, Scary Movie 4, Extreme Movie and Death at a Funeral.

His self-deprecating humor cracks me up! I love how he talks about his height, his family and the fact that he’s not a fighter.

I really became a fan after he stole the show during his stand-up routine at the All-Star Comedy Jam at Phoenix’s Celebrity Theatre back in 2009. He absolutely killed it that night!

Oktoberfest at CityScape

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Beer! Beer! Plus Beer! Practice saying “Weisswurst” (white sausage) and you’re revved up and ready to go for CityScape’s Oktoberfest event.

Oktoberfest_maidThis Saturday and Sunday, October 22nd and 23rd, CityScape’s big, open mall will be hoppin’ with live music and dancing, the aroma of sausages and sauerkraut, and tables stacked with steins of cold German beer.

If you’re nuts for beer, especially authentic German beer, Oktoberfest will feature beers and breweries that have been making people happy for centuries. The Weihenstephan Brewery, for example, was founded in Bavaria in 768. Just think of it: 768 A.D. Everyone’s favorite beverage preceded the printing press, telephones, blue jeans and Monday Night Football.

You can also sample Spaten Oktoberfest Beer, created in 1872 for the world’s first Oktoberfest, plus Bitburger Premium Pils, from a brewery founded in 1817. Tim Hughes, the lucky guy in charge of selecting the beers says, “Our goal is to deliver beers that you would find at Oktoberfest in Germany to make this the most authentic experience this side of the Atlantic.”

final oktoberfest ticketA Munich-style feast is in the works, along with live, on-stage entertainment and a dance floor. Presented by Phoenix Sister Cities, this is the first of many big events planned for CityScape.

Tickets go on sale this Friday, October 1st, for only $10 per person, or you can pick up free tickets in advance at the following CityScape businesses: Lucky Strike Lanes; 5 Guys Burgers; Gold’s Gym; CVS Pharmacy; Designer District; Par Exsalonce Salon and West of Soho.

Come and raise a glass or three to the first launch party at CityScape, as Downtown continues to bust out some new moves. Cheers, everyone.

One Big Bash: Cinco de Mayo Downtown

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Let Austin have its Reggae Festival. Let New York have Mostly Mozart. And by all means, let Colorado keep the Fruitcake Toss.

We Phoenicians get one of the big daddys of all festivals: Cinco de Mayo.

Stretching over nine blocks in Downtown Phoenix (Jefferson Street from First Avenue to Fifth Avenue), this year’s Cinco Festival is expected to draw more than 225,000 people in just two days. That’s twice the population of Santa Clara, California. No wonder it’s considered the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the entire Southwest.

CincoNow in its 17th year, the Cinco de Mayo Festival is equal parts outdoor party, live concert and Mexican food fest, with added attractions like the NBA’s largest mobile basketball playground and dancers from Ballet Folklorico.

And here’s still another reason to love this festival: admission is only $5 per person, and kids 12 and under get in free. The celebration kicks off this Saturday at 2 pm and runs till midnight, then opens again Sunday from noon to 10 pm. Check out the highlights:

Local bands, plus big headliner War

Funk band War, known for hits like “Low Rider,” “Cisco Kid,” and “Why Can’t We Be Friends,” will bring the party to a rowdy close Sunday night at 8 p.m.  But don’t worry: whenever you happen to arrive, you can catch performances from bands like La Familia, Grupo Calor, Powerdrive and Carlos Rivas.

Foodie Alert

I probably don’t need to say this, but what the heck: come hungry. Chances are, your favorite Mexican food and drink will be on tap.

Playtime

Whether you’re a big or little kid, there’s all kinds of stuff to keep you juiced up and happy. Shoot hoops at the big NBA NATION basketball playground or watch BMX stunt performances.

And here’s one last detail that bears mentioning: Arvizu Charities, in partnership with Grand Canyon University, will award more than $30,000 in scholarships to the school. Students can apply during the festival or at arvizuscholarships.com.
