Urban Wine Walk Saturday

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Join the throng of wine enthusiasts and  urban adventurists who will be rating grapes during Saturday’s Urban Wine Walk.

Wine_Walk2This free event encourages Wine Walkers to ride METRO light rail (just $3.50 for a day pass) between three hubs–Downtown Phoenix, Tempe, and Uptown–to get a taste of the emerging wine and dining scene in our Central City.

You’ll make the jump from novice to wine expert as you sample 2 oz pours on a diverse list of over 50 wines. From deep red Cabernets and Pinot Noirs to sweeter Chardonnays and Rieslings, the Urban Wine Walk has something for all tastes. Pours are priced between $2-$4 and restaurant hosts will provide Wine Walkers with tasty palate-cleansing snacks along the way.

Urban Wine Walk is scheduled to run 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. but don’t be surprised if a thirsty mob arrives at Phoenix Public Market Urban Grocery & Wine Bar early to claim the free gift bags being doled out while supplies last.

logoIn all, 17 bars and restaurants will participate in this event, which is sponsored by the Downtown Phoenix Partnership and Mix 96.9 FM. Downtown restaurants include 1130, The Arrogant Butcher, Brick Pizzeria, ICON, District American Kitchen & Wine Bar, Kincaid’s, Networks, Nobuo at Teeter House, Phoenix Public Market Urban Grocery & Wine Bar, Province, Rose & Crown, Sam’s Café, and Steve’s Greenhouse Grill. Everything a Wine Walker needs, including a full list of participants, maps, plus wine and snack deets, is available at downtownphoenix.com/winewalk.

Matsuri Headlines Weekend Events

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

There’s so much fun to be had in Downtown Phoenix this week it oughta be illegal. Here are just a few of the highlights:

This Saturday and Sunday  from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Downtown Phoenix will host the 27th Annual Matsuri: A Festival of Japan, at Heritage and Science Park.

matsuriA showcase for the sights, sounds and tastes of Japanese culture, Matsuri includes food vendors, martial arts exhibits, dancing, drumming, crafts, children’s activities, and bazaar-style shopping. There will be live performances on three stages plus competitive Kendama, a traditional Japanese game of skill that involves scooping up a wooden ball and catching it in a cup.

This year’s event offers two new wrinkles: A beer garden, sponsored by Asahi beer, and Yo Matsuri, a night festival. Yo Matsuri will feature Taiko (Japanese drums), an Awa Odori dance performance and Karaoke, which is in fact Japanese.

Nobuo at Teeter House, one of Downtown’s hottest restaurants and the home of James Beard Award-winning chef Nobuo Fukuda, will be joining the fun, offering a wide selection of Japanese craft brews and sakes. They’ll be serving their regular lunch menu, plus special sashimi plates and Nobuo’s signature spoon tastes.

Admission to Matsuri is free and for more information visit azmatsuri.org

Lewis Black Returns

You know what makes our country great? Only in America can a screaming middle-aged man become a world-famous comedian simply by ranting and raving about the state of our society. Black is definitely a tour de force and the tour is stopping at the Orpheum Theatre for two shows Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m.

Ten Chimneys

This play within a play is set at a Wisconsin mansion and provides an equally funny and sad look at the private lives of actors who are always on stage. Check out blogger Liz Fichera’s review here. Feb. 24-Mar. 6 at Herberger Theatre Center. Call 602-256-6995 for tickets.

Gold’s Spin-a-thon

Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to noon Gold’s Gym Elite at CityScape will be hosting a spectacular outdoor spinning event to benefit the American Diabetes Association. This high-energy affair costs $10/hour with all proceeds going to the ADA. Every hour purchased includes a raffle ticket. Get the weekend off to a healthy start and meet some new friends all for a great cause! Call 602-368-1221 to reserve your spot.

Have a great week!

11 Things To Do In 2011

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

2010 was awesome. I got to ring in the New Year with Joel McHale, listen to the Phoenix Symphony rock out to the Music of Led Zeppelin, cheer for exciting pro athletes like Justin Upton, Steve Nash and Diana Taurasi, watch contestants from Top Chef cook live at Phoenix Public Market, eat amazing food at restaurants like District American Kitchen and Thai Elephant, and sip $5 martinis at Hanny’s.

It was an unbelievable year. But I know I can  do more in 2011.

With the arrival of a New Year comes a new surplus of fun and exciting things to do Downtown. Here are 11 things I plan on doing in 2011:

LMAO - Stand Up Live! debuts at CityScape March 3 with comedians Jay Mohr (personal fave), Billy Cardell, Christopher Titus and the Wayans (!!!!) already on the books.

rushBig Time Rush - Canada’s greatest rock export, Rush will bring their Time Machine Tour to US Airways Center on June 16. Tickets go on sale Monday, Jan. 24 at 10 a.m. (”Working Man” is my jam.)

Get Into the Swing – Every Monday is Savoy Night at Ghost Lounge and your chance to learn how to swing dance for the bargain basement price of $8. Ghost Lounge has quickly become one of Downtown’s hottest hangouts and Savoy Night is always hopping. Har.

Showing Some Skin: Gus von Hagens’ Body Worlds and the Brain returns to Arizona Science Center this Friday, Jan. 21, for a limited engagement. I missed this exhibit last year but won’t make that same mistake twice.

Top Shelf at SeamusSeamus McCaffrey’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, recently named 2010 Best of Downtown Happy Hour, has one of the greatest selections of Irish Whiskey and Scotch in the city and this year I’m vowing to buy couple of fingers of Aberfeldy 21 just to say I drank a glass of Scotch nearly as old as Scottsdale-born actress and Valley Youth Theatre alum Emma Stone.

Get Your Geek On - Dubbed the “signature pop culture event of the Southwest” for good reason, Phoenix Comicon returns to Downtown this Memorial Day Weekend, May 26-29,  at Phoenix Convention Center’s North Building. Comicon is the Super Bowl of superheroes and a people-watching event like no other.

Eat at Nobuo – Did you know that Downtown Phoenix is home to two James Beard Award-winning chefs who work less than 50 yards apart? Pizzeria Bianco’s Chris Bianco and Nobuo at Teeter House’s Nobuo Fukuda are wowing diners daily over at Heritage Square and Nobuo was the recent recipient of this gushing five-star review by ace Arizona Republic food critic Howard Seftel. Insert drool here.

Zombie_WalkWEBA Night with the Knights of Ni - Theater League Phoenix presents Monty Python’s Spamalot at historic Orpheum Theatre Feb. 17-20. I’m a sucker for Python’s comedy and Spam happens to be delicious so this is a perfect fit for me.

Race to the Finish – The Great Urban Race returns to Downtown March 12 and features costumed teams racing against one another to solve 12 clues while experiencing the essence of the Central City.

Star Gaze -  Chase Field will host the 2011 MLB All-Star Game July 12, with the fan-favorite Home Run Derby scheduled for July 11 with MLB FanFest invading Downtown all week long.

Pretend That We’re (Un)Dead – In just two years the Downtown Phoenix Ambassadors’ Zombie Walk (photo, left) has grown from 200 brain-eaters to well over 2,000. How many Zombies will walk, er, limp in 2011? Bring your appetite for human flesh down to Heritage Square Oct. 29 and find out for yourself. Victims are also welcome!

These are just a few of the items on my Bucket List. What’s on yours?

Nobuo Opens, Tilted Kilt Coming Soon

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

The summer heat hasn’t hampered the Downtown dining scene.  Every week brings welcome news of restaurants expanding or new additions to the dining landscape.  The recent influx of restaurants prompted the creation of a new annual publication from the Downtown Phoenix Partnership.  The Downtown Dining Guide 2010 is the Bible of Downtown dining, highlighting exciting new eateries as well as the established classics we all know and love.  For more information or to get your copy read this blog post by the creators of the guide.

NobuWe are still counting down to the opening of the retail portion of CityScape in the fall and this week brings news of a major addition to the restaurant lineup.  The New Times Chow Bella blog reported that Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery will open later this year, an exciting complement to the 14 other restaurants already signed on.  If you’ve ever been to the Kilt, you know the good food and cold beer isn’t the only reason to go.  The first two restaurants are expected to open later this month with Lucky Strike Lanes and Five Guys Burgers & Fries getting it all started.

AZCentral reported the long-awaited grand opening of Nobuo at Teeter House is right around the corner.  Nobuo opened for lunch on Wednesday and will gradually expand hours and menu options throughout the summer.  The James Beard Award-winning Fukuda is hosting a dinner open house today through Saturday, July 24th, an excellent opportunity to sample dishes from the menu.  For more information please visit:  Nobuo at Teeter House to open for lunch July 14.  For a look at the lunch menu please visit: Nobuo at Teeter House Update:  Lunch Menu.

East Meets West on North 6th Street

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Admittedly, I have a lot to learn at the Arizona Asian Festival. I don’t know tai chi. I can’t do origami. But I can say, without hesitation, that I’m a skilled eater, a talent that’s no doubt shared by our readers, who’ll enjoy tasting naan from India and spring rolls from Vietnam as much as I will.

AZasianFestivalNow in its 16th year, the Arizona Asian Festival brings East and West together this Saturday and Sunday at Heritage & Science Park. More than a dozen Asian cultures are represented, with two stages that showcase entertainment, including traditional dances and music, martial arts demonstrations, Japanese Taiko drumming and more.

Spend an afternoon strolling through the Avenue of Cultures, featuring booths from different cultures. Or take your tots to the Children’s Wonderland, designed to keep kids happy and parents sane.

Want to learn taekwondo? Local masters can show you how. Interested in body painting? Artists will demonstrate Mehendi, an ancient form of Indian body painting. And I haven’t forgotten my fellow foodies, who can sample heavenly food from Cambodia, Thailand, Korea, China, India and more.

fukadaSpeaking of heavenly food, Heritage & Science Park has an even bigger coup in store for those who love Asian cuisine. Chef Nobuo Fukuda, winner of numerous accolades (including the biggie, a James Beard Award), is opening his first Downtown restaurant this summer.

Fukuda is transforming The Teeter House from a Victorian tearoom into a cozy sanctuary for his artful blend of Japanese and global cuisine. Nobuo at Teeter House will serve bento boxes, steamed pork buns and Asian teas at lunch, while dinner will feature his signature sashimi and izakaya, or Japanese tavern, food.

Expect local and organic produce in his dishes, and wonderful pairings of wine and food. We’ll keep you posted about the opening date of Nobuo at Teeter House, which will add even more luster to the Downtown Phoenix dining scene. Until then, kanpai!
