Oakville Grocery Debuts June 30

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

One of the anchor stores of Downtown’s multi-use CityScape development is set to open its doors to the public Thursday.

OakvilleWEB2Napa Valley-born Oakville Grocery, will keep hours of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday – Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

If you follow Oakville on Facebook you’ve been privy to some leaked photos recently teasing everything from the store’s wide selection of Arizona-made wines to bathroom tissue (complete with the laugh-out-loud caption, “We’ve got TOILET PAPER! oooooo ahhhhhhh!!!!!” Hilarious.

Of course Oakville has much more than bathroom tissue. There are gourmet cheeses, salsas, specialty sauces and condiments, olives, chips, dips, and a whole lot more.

In addition to groceries, household items, wine and beer (including Moose Drool in a can), Oakville should prove to be a popular lunch hour stop, offering handmade pizzas, hot and cold sandwiches, soups, salads, and other to-go grub.

There’s a wine bar with three beer taps in the back and an expansive hot/cold beverage bar in the front, with a walk-up window facing the CityScape interior park for Downtowners looking to get their coffee and go.

Check out all of Oakville’s charms this Thursday.

CityScape Update

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

When folks learn that I work for Downtown Phoenix one of three questions follows without exception:

1) What’s with the glowing uterus in Civic Space Park? *

2) Can you get me free tickets to [fill in the blank]? **

3) When does CityScape open?

Let’s address that third question now.

08 0817 office night view overall with signageWEBIn case the aggressive construction has eluded you, CityScape is a pretty big deal, both in size and its significance to Downtown. The mixed-use complex covers two lineal blocks in the heart of Downtown Phoenix and combines residential, office, retail, entertainment and public space with the total area of over 1,000,000 square feet.

As for when CityScape “opens,” the updated schedule is looking like this:

APRIL: Firms will soon be moving into the office tower at Central Avenue and Washington. Also, the construction team will complete an 80-foot long elevated pedestrian bridge crossing above Central and connecting to the new Patriots Square Park and CityScape’s retail by month’s end.

MAY: Gold’s Gym to open.

JUNE: Landscaping of Patriots Square Park to be completed.

JULY: Opening of hipster-friendly Urban Outfitters and Lucky Strike Bowling, plus Designer District, CVS pharmacy, Republic of Couture and Press Coffee.

SEPTEMBER: Oakville Grocery to open.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER: Chef Aaron May to open a noodle bar and small Taqueria, La Grande Orange owners to open Public House, plus The Breakfast Club and a Sam Fox chop house to make debuts.

2011: BluBurger Grille and Cherry on Top yogurt to open.

Late 2011: 240-room Palomar hotel to open.

Oakville Grocery in CityScape

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Oakville Grocery will be opening in Downtown Phoenix as part of the CityScape project. Originally AJ’s had signed a lease but when Basha’s ran into financial trouble they pulled out of the project, leaving us all to wonder who would take their place. I was hoping for a Fresh & Easy or a Trader Joe’s although I never thought that either were a likely possibility.

PrintLooking at Oakville’s Web site, I see the store has the look and feel of a Trader Joe’s but it also looks…expensive or just too fancy for Downtown. I don’t know a lot of Downtown residents who would really benefit from an expensive grocery store. Will it be possible to pop in here for a gallon of milk and not pay close to 4 bucks? Can I get a cheap loaf of regular bread here on a Sunday afternoon or will it be those loafs of artisan bread covered in birdseed mix for $4.99?

There hasn’t been a grocery store in Downtown Phoenix since I was born, so I guess anything is better than nothing but this seems like a bad choice to me. I wish them luck and I hope I’m wrong, but at least there is a CVS going into CityScape because that is more my speed.
