PAPA Comes To Civic Space Park Saturday

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

The Valley’s only pedestrian-driven community parade returns for a sixth installment this Saturday, this time with a new home at Civic Space Park in Downtown Phoenix.

2011PAPAPhoenix Annual Parade of the Arts debuted Downtown in 2006 and this year transitions from Roosevelt Row to nearby Civic Space Park, one of Sunset Magazine’s Top 10 City Parks.

But don’t let the fancy new digs fool you: PAPA promises more of the same brand of family friendly fun including live music, puppet shows, street performers, circus attractions, floats, face-painting, and dance–all leading up to the 5:45 community led parade that will weave through the streets of Downtown.

There’s no event like PAPA, which unites the arts with the greater community by providing a free and open to the public, mobile expression of the arts lifestyle that is unique to Downtown Phoenix.

So decorate your bike, dress up like a elf, paint your face, and let loose at the Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts, an all-ages, all-shapes, all-sizes, all-day party like no other.

Unleash Your Wild Side at PAPA

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Get ready to be astounded, amazed and wildly amused. Fire breathers, sword swallowers and acrobats are just the beginning.

As always, the main attraction at the Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts is you. Your creativity. Your individuality. Your free-form, I-gotta-be-me participation in Downtown’s high-energy celebration of our community. (Check out photos from past PAPAs on our Flickr stream.)

PubCrawl_PAPA 183The Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts, known as PAPA, is a chance to express yourself through costumes, art and performance while marching with your fellow Phoenicians through the streets of Downtown Phoenix. You can walk, ride, dance or crawl along in the parade. It’s a free-floating exercise in your democratic right to be as wild and crazy as you want.

Now in its fifth year, the world’s only parading arts fair is called “Let it grow, let it grow, let it grow,” as Downtown celebrates 20 years of progress. It all happens November 13th from 5 to 10 p.m. on 5th Street between Roosevelt and Garfield.

So let’s get right to it. Here are the four diverse acts that will perform either live on the main stage or act as parade leaders:

Flam Chen – If you do nothing else, go to Flam Chen’s web site and look at the videos and photos of their performances. It’s not an overstatement to say this acrobatic and theatrical troupe, which combines fire theater with otherworldly costumes and aerial technology, is astonishing to watch. Based in Tucson, this troupe has produced performances for director Tim Burton and Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee. Flam Chen will serve as co-parade leaders with the Bad Cactus Brass Band. Speaking of which…

Bad Cactus Brass Band – These are seriously talented musicians, some of them ex-ASU alums. This New Orleans street jazz band plays everything from original dance music and Dixieland to gospel, swing and pop songs they’ve re-interpreted.

Strange Family Circus – Just like the name says, this act is unquestionably strange. Headed by the Dr. Rev. Stephen Strange, this funny, offbeat sideshow act offers the joys of watching others swallow swords and breathe fire. I say: Have at it, guys. A true Phoenix original, Strange and his family bring their quirky talents to the main stage.

Djentrification – Also a main stage act, this DJ officially started his career in 1998, but really began by messing around with tape recorders at the age of 11. He revels in sound experiments and brings creativity and energy to every performance.

Fifth Annual PAPA Parade

Monday, August 30th, 2010

PAPA’s home.

Dry_RiverFringe art is all the rage in Downtown Phoenix and there’s no better showcase for our central city’s talented and proud fringe art community than the Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts, or PAPA if you please, now in its fifth year.

This year’s PAPA festival is going down Saturday, Nov. 13 in the Roosevelt arts district and promises a fun-filled day of snake-charming, puppeteering, face-painting, stilt-walking, performace art, music, dancing and probably the most uniquely awesome family-friendly extravaganza the Valley has to offer. The day culminates with a community parade through the streets of Downtown Phoenix. The public is encouraged to enter their own floats in the parade and registration forms and rules can be downloaded here.

Downtown Pub Crawl and PAPA Redux

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Thanks to everyone who joined in the revelry during last weekend’s Third Annual Downtown Phoenix Pub Crawl and fourth edition of the Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts.

SkeletonBoth of these events shattered attendance projections and the feedback from attendees was off-the-charts positive. I overheard many Pub Crawlers say “Let’s do this again in the spring!” and one college-aged PAPA-goer stood frozen, jaw agape as the Skeleton Crew passed by: “That’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen,” he said.

The Pub Crawl excitement rose to a crescendo Friday evening as walk-up ticket sales were brisk even as the first trolleys were departing on their routes. Loved the stunned looks on the faces of staff members at Seamus McCaffrey’s as the first Crawlers pushed through the doors and rushed the bar. There was even Pub Crawl American Idol! Good times!

Special shout-outs to the Team 5 Crawlers, unanimous choice as Spirit Award winners. As the night went on and the drinks continued to flow, Team 5 developed their own chants and became the party wherever they went. If you ever wanted a textbook lesson on how to properly Pub Crawl, Team 5 are your mentors. Additional thanks to the 150-plus Crawlers who completed the journey and made it to Sonoma Casual Dining for breakfast and post-Crawl stories and laughs. Well done, peeps.

Saturday’s PAPA festival dazzled the senses. From the music–Dry River Yacht Club and Fatigo are worthy of your attention, trust me–to the costumes, arts & crafts, floats and food, it was a galvanizing event that the Downtown Phoenix art community should be proud of. Kids went nuts for the face-painting and puppet shows, and paraders young and old embraced the spirit of PAPA as they marched through the streets of Downtown. If you’ve never attended the PAPA festivities, check out our Flickr photo stream here.

Thanks again to everyone who made these events such an unqualified success and I can’t wait for the Fourth Annual Downtown Phoenix Pub Crawl and fifth Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts in 2010.
