10 Huge Holiday Events

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

The holidays are getting bigger Downtown. Just a few years ago, it would have been tough to name more than five big events for the holidays. This year, it was tough to narrow it down to 10 (download the entire holiday calendar here).

So, in semi-chronological order, here are 10 ideas to amp up your holiday cheer:

1. Ice Skating in the Park – Wow. Our very own Lincoln Center. From now through Jan. 15, the plaza at CityScape will transform into an ice rink. The cost is $10 per person, including skate rentals and the rink is open daily 3-11 p.m.

2. Valley Youth Theatre Presents A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tail – Speaking as a lifelong Eeyore, get some tix for this holiday classic or that pesky raincloud might hang over your head. Dec. 3-23.

3. Center Dance Ensemble Presents The Snow Queen – If you’ve got family from out of town, warm them up with this gorgeous retelling of a Hans Christian Andersen tale, set to music by Prokofiev. Herberger Theater, Dec. 4-19. Discounts available for students and seniors.

VYT_Pooh206x1354. Actors Theatre Company Presents A Christmas Carol – Danger, Will Robinson: After 19 years, ATC is retiring this terrific musical. Herberger Theater, Dec. 4-24.

5. Candlelight Messiah – Played in a candlelit setting (which is a pretty cool idea) the Phoenix Symphony Chorus performs Handel’s “Messiah.” St. Mary’s Basilica, Friday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

6. Ballet Arizona Presents Ib Andersen’s The Nutcracker – This one goes without saying. Ballet Arizona is a local treasure, so go and get swept away by this spectacular production. Symphony Hall, Dec. 10-26.

7. Christmas Mariachi Festival – The world’s top mariachis and the amazing Ballet Folklorico come together for this annual event. US Airways Center, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m.

Alice_Cooper8. Alice Cooper’s Christmas Pudding – For us locals, Alice is a bit of a hero; he’s done great things to boost his hometown. On Dec. 18, you can join Alice and his original band, along with Rob Zombie, Cheech Marin and more for a night of comedy and music to benefit Valley youth. 7 p.m., Comerica Theater (that’s the new name for the Dodge).

9. Snow Day at the Children’s Museum of Phoenix – On Dec. 19, ten tons of snow will fall on the front lawn, with a visit from Frosty the Snowman. You know you want to go. Tickets are $9 each and include museum admission.

10. The Salvation Army Christmas Dinner – A nice reminder about one of the best meanings of the season. These good folks can always use donations, food and volunteers. Dec. 25 at the Phoenix Convention Center. Doors open at 9:30 a.m.

Off the Beaten Path

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Got an urge to color outside the lines? If so, here are some offbeat ideas for your inner nonconformist, bottled up in business clothes all week.

QueensrycheBQueensryche Cabaret

Billed as the first adults-only rock show, this flashy production comes to the Orpheum Theatre on Thursday, May 20th at 7 pm. How flashy? Expect go-go and burlesque dancers, jugglers, a trapeze artist and a contortionist on stage, performing alongside the band Queensryche, who conceived the show. You’ll hear some of the band’s hits as well as new selections.

Phoenix Comicon

As a writer, comic books were among my first loves. I grew up reading my brother’s Marvel Comics collection and often snuck into his room to swipe the latest issues of Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four.

comiconWhether you’d like to meet old-school giants like Marvel’s Stan Lee or modern masters like Todd McFarlane, check out this year’s Phoenix Comicon. Now one of the top-ranked events in the field, Comicon will attract thousands to the Phoenix Convention Center & Hyatt Regency over Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-May 30.

Emerging Artist Series at the Hard Rock Café

New and upcoming bands will appear live this Friday, May 21st, at the downtown Hard Rock Café. The concert starts at 8 pm, and the ticket price is a $10 donation at the door, which goes directly to Ear Candy Productions. The good folks at Ear Candy, a nonprofit organization, are working to keep music programs in schools, one of the best ideas I’ve heard (no pun intended).

Arizona Highways Travel Show

“Off the beaten path” takes on a whole different meaning at this event. Now in its second year, the Arizona Highways Travel Show gives you the goods on road trips along Route 66, hiking trails through state parks and visits to the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and Sedona. The show takes place from 10 am to 5 pm, this Saturday and Sunday, at the Phoenix Convention Center. General admission is $5 per person. Kids 10 and under get in free.

Good News from the Neighborhood

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Greetings !

The Economic Development Department at the Downtown Phoenix Partnership wants to get the word out about the good news from the neighborhood.  While the country endures continued economic uncertainty, Downtown is still growing with more success right around the corner. Downtown has seen an influx of coffee shops in recent months and the 200,000-square-foot retail portion of CityScape is set for a rolling open this summer and fall.

DistrictDowntown Phoenix’s restaurants and bars have some positive news, reporting a 16% increase in revenue in the last quarter of 2009 when compared with the same period of 2008. This is in contrast to the -7.6% drop in restaurant and bar revenues citywide over the same period. The 4th Quarter of 2009 also represented the 1-year anniversary of the Sheraton Downtown Phoenix and hotel & motel receipts are up 25% when compared with 4Q 2008 numbers. Keep in mind the Sheraton opened in 2008 with some of the highest booking numbers in the history of the industry and the continued growth is a testament to the success of the Phoenix Convention Center in drawing visitors Downtown.

We will be checking in regularly to give you the latest updates on Downtown Phoenix economic development. For more information, we invite you to visit the Business Development portion of the Downtown Phoenix Web site here. If you are interested in receiving Dateline Downtown Phoenix, our monthly economic development newsletter, you can sign up here.

Thanks!

Fan Axxess Keys WWE Success

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Most guys, at some point during their lifespan, get into pro wrestling.

I was no different.

jesse-the-bodyIn Southern Minnesota, where I grew up, wrestling was h-u-g-e. The American Wrestling Association, which was based out of Minneapolis and was at one time the premier wrestling company in the country, featured legends like Nick Bockwinkle, Sheik Adnan El Kassey, The Crusher, Verne and Greg Gagne, Jerry Blackwell, Ken Patera and a certain flamboyant, feather boa-wearing loudmouth named Jesse Ventura [pictured left], who went by the name “The Body.”

We Minnesotans would later call him “The Governor.”

In the early 80’s most of the AWA’s top talent, including golden-locked rising star Hulk Hogan, were lured to the then-World Wrestling Federation by power promoter Vince McMahon and soon the WWF became the most dominant company in the sport’s history, spawning pay-per-views, video games, action figures, a gazillion T-shirts, and more than 10 hours of cable programming each week.

Today, more than 25 years after Hogan captured the WWF heavyweight belt and ignited a nation of Hulk-a-maniacs, now-World Wrestling Entertainment remains at the top of the wrestling food chain. Why? The evidence can be found in Downtown Phoenix all week.

33027_PPV_WMAxxess_2Web_300x250WrestleMania – The bell rings on the latest installment of wrestling’s biggest extravaganza Sunday at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Fan Friendliness – WWE’s popular interactive  fan experience, AXXESS, is happening Thursday thru Sunday at the Phoenix Convention Center. The list of wrestlers scheduled to appear at AXXESS includes The Undertaker, John Cena, Edge, Big Show, Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, CM Punk, Rey Mysterio, Kane, MVP and Sheamus (not to be confused with Seamus). There will be autographs, memorabilia, video games, WWE Shop, Superstar Entrance , photos, Vince McMahon and Stone Cold’s 4×4, Kidzone, a tribute to Shawn Michaels, and many other interactive exhibits.

Preserving History – The WWE Hall of Fame ceremony will be held Saturday at Dodge Theatre. This year’s nominees include Ted DiBiase, Antonio Inoki, Wendi Richter, “Mad Dog” Vachon, Bob Uecker and Stu Hart.

Monday Night RAW – The iconic program that marked the beginning of WWE’s television takeover will be live at US Airways Center on Monday (for non-fans, the “RAW” episodes that follow marquee pay-per-views, especially WrestleMania, tend to be some of the highest-rated cable telecasts of the year).

So, with the WWE and its passionate fans visiting Downtown this week, the people watching figures to be ideal. Let’s just hope there’s no piledriving in the streets.

Irwin, Fairbanks Among DREAMR Winners

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

The 16th Annual DREAMR Awards were held Monday afternoon at the Phoenix Convention Center, where R. Neil Irwin received the Visionary Award, the highest honor given.

DREAMR with dateDREAMR stands for Downtown Revitalization Effort Awards of Merit and Recognition and honors the individuals, projects and organizations that dare to dream and work to make those dreams come true. Thanks to DREAMRs, urban blight and decline have been replaced with new centers of retail and commerce, urban residential opportunities, and an active arts and entertainment community. Because these DREAMRs followed their dreams, crowds of people are returning to a renewed and invigorated Downtown Phoenix.

Irwin, a partner at Brian Cave LLP, was the only Chairman the Downtown Phoenix Partnership had known during the organization’s first 20 years of operation prior to stepping down earlier this year. He played a key role in both the revitalization of Downtown and the development of the Partnership. In 2009, Irwin was named one of The Business Journal’s 25-Most Admired Top Level Executives.

Also receiving DREAMR Awards were: Tom’s Tavern owner Mike Ratner (Private Sector Individual); Don Keuth (Public Sector / Non-Profit Individual); Phoenix Mercury (Organization); Freeport McMoRan Center (Project); and former Phoenix City Manager Frank Fairbanks (”Unsung Hero”).

In addition to awarding the DREAMRs, the event also spotlighted Best of Downtown winners and featured two captivating keynote speakers, Local First Arizona Executive Director Kimber Lanning and Alliance for Audience Executive Director Matt Lehrman. Both offered up simple ways everyone can help raise the profile of Downtown and grow local business. You can watch Lehrman’s speech here and here, and you can watch Lanning’s speech here and here.

Rodgers To Keynote Black Chamber Anniversary Celebration

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

The Greater Phoenix Black Chamber of Commerce’s (GPBCC) 11th Anniversary celebration, “Telling Our Story,” will be held on December 11 at the Phoenix Convention Center.

This event will feature Johnathan Rodgers, President & CEO of TV One, who will deliver the keynote address. The GPBCC will also present the Corporate Business Partner and Small Business Partner of the Year awards.

My wife and I attended the GPBCC gala last year and we had an amazing time. If you are able to purchase tickets, I strongly encourage you to do so. It’s an excellent opportunity for you to mingle with the Valley’s movers and shakers.
