If you’re looking to fill your weekend’s social calendar, Downtown Phoenix offers the perfect blend of urban nightlife, culture, family friendly events, dining, and live music.

Grab a slice of pizza from Downtown’s newest pizza parlor, Downtown Pizza Lounge (144 E. Washington St.). Phoenix Suns assistant coach and former shooting star Dan Majerle opened this lunch spot last week next door to his flagship bar and restaurant, Majerle’s. Chow down on huge $3 pizza slices (popular varieties like pepperoni, sausage, Margherita, etc.) while getting your SportsCenter fix. Downtown Pizza Lounge might stay open late depending on Downtown’s event calendar.

Friday at 5:30 p.m., Coach & Willie’s hosts Super Date for Super Nate, a benefit dinner and poker tournament for Nate Dinoffria and his family. Please read Nate’s story here. A dinner ticket is $25, a spot in the poker tournament is $50, and dinner and poker can be had for the unbeatable price of $65. You may also sponsor a poker table for $250. Downtown is Rocking this Week

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

It’s official.  The season has started!  Just like last fall, I am already having a hard time squeezing all of the things going on into the latest edition of What’s Happening. I encourage you to download the entire guide but here are just a few of this week’s highlights.

tompetty_img02_hires-official-from-press-release-20101First things first, our very own Urban Wine Walk, a FREE, light rail-based event that encourages participants to explore the best of Downtown Phoenix, the Camelback Corridor, and Tempe, takes place this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Enjoy special pricing available only to Urban Wine Walk participants as your favorite restaurants regale you with their best wines and succulent hors d’oeuvres.  What a great way to visit all the places you’ve heard of but haven’t had a chance to try! Play amateur wine critic as you track all the places you visit using the map and wine list available at the link above. If you don’t want to take my word for it,  read this great piece by Kellie Hwang of the Arizona Republic.

The Diamondbacks finish out their final homestand of the season this week against the Rockies and arch-nemesis Dodgers and they are going out with a bang with Fandamonium.  This Saturday and Sunday they’ve got amazing giveaways like trips to Las Vegas, spa days, free stays at Wild Horse Pass and Casino, and even a free ATV!  Go to Chase Field and show your DBacks pride – you may win a cool prize!

daniel-tosh182x135The Phoenix Symphony performs one of the most popular pieces of the 20th Century, Bolero.  This evocative piece debuted in 1928, and made a splash 50 years later in the movie “10,” starring Dudley Moore and Bo Derek.   We may not have beaches for you to run on, but you can still be moved at Symphony Hall this Thursday and Saturday.  Also featured this week at Symphony Hall is the fiery Poncho Sanchez, who is heralded as one of the top percussionists of our time.

Other big names in Downtown this week – Daniel Tosh (from “Tosh.0″ on Comedy Central) performs at the Dodge Theater on Saturday, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are at US Airways Center on Sunday and the annual charity event Beauty of a Bonzer with featured performing artist Train, is happening on Saturday as well.

This is just the tip of the iceberg so dig in and have fun!

Football, Hypo Twins and The Music Man

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

The summer is almost finished, but the fun Downtown is just starting.  The Phoenix Symphony kicks off the season with their famous Pops series this weekend, NFL-VIKINGS-SAINTSbased on the hit musical The Music Man.  Let the Symphony regale you with  “76 Trombones” and music that will have you dancing in your seat.

The Hard Rock Café and Psyko Steve bring you The Hypo Twins this Friday night.  This local trio best describes their sound as disco party scum rock, and while that may sound like it’s out on the fringe, it sounded fun and funky to me when I heard it, so I may be their newest fan.

NFL officially starts its season Thursday and while we may not have the stadium, we do have the party.  Thursday Coach & Willie’s is hosting a kickoff party for the Vikings/Saints game and on Sunday they open early with a phenomenal hangover menu to recoat your tummy and keep the party going.  The Rose and Crown Pub is hosting a Pigskin Pig-Out complete with corn bag, horseshoes, and the piece de résistance – a roast pig!

This is just a sampling of What’s Happening in Downtown Phoenix. Get the whole kit and kaboodle here.

Memorial Weekend Is Red, White and Blue All Over

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Ready to show your true colors? Then this is your weekend. Along with some all-American tunes, Downtown Phoenix offers you some pretty surprising ways to see things in red, white and blue.

memorial_dayThe Red

Nothing says “three-day weekend” like a Sunday brunch with a ripe, red Bloody Mary (or two). The Sunday Brunch Buffet at Steve’s Greenhouse Grill offers made-to-order omelets and a Belgian waffle station from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The White

Few places are more romantic than the Arizona Center at night. The reason? The spectacular use of light, especially the small white lights strung across the palm trees in the courtyard. Bring your honey here for a chance to get up-close and personal under the stars.

The Blue

The musicians I grew up with cut their teeth on the blues: Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck. I still love the blues, and if you share that passion, drop by Fat Cats. This small, Downtown club features live blues bands and affordable drinks. Plus, there’s no cover charge. Fat Cats is located at 915 W. Grand Avenue.

And the Whole Shebang

For the true red, white and blue experience, get tickets to see the Phoenix Symphony’s Patriotic Pops performance. You’ll hear the usual suspects, like rousing marches by John Phillips Sousa, plus some unexpected selections, like the score for Victory at Sea. Performances are this Friday and Saturday at Symphony Hall.

Hoops, Comics and Cosmos

Monday, May 24th, 2010

I hope you had a great week. We have a few fun things to do this week, so let’s get started.

SunsRU Orange? The Downtown Ambassadors will be hosting a “Show UR ORNG” Rally Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the Information Center (1st Ave. / Adams) featuring games, food from Carmine’s Little Italy, Hero Factory and Fair Trade Cafe, plus music from Bad Cactus Marching Band and prize giveaways to fans wearing orange. Then, at 6 p.m., the Suns will look to even up their Western Conference Finals matchup with the Lakers at 2 games apiece. There are watch parties at Majerle’s, Coach & Willie’s and The Duce.

3spidermanWith Memorial Day approaching, it reminds us of not only the obvious, but of the outdoor fun to be had. The Movie in the Park at Civic Space Park is a great way to spend some time with friends and loved ones, and its free (my favorite word). The Phoenix Mercury play the Atlanta Dream on Friday, and the Phoenix Symphony can regale us with our patriotic favorites on Friday and Saturday. How about patriotism of a different sort with Crosby, Stills & Nash at the Dodge Theater?

Starting off the summer movie blockbusters is Sex and the City 2. You can come see it at the Arizona Center, but first, join the pre-party at 1130 the Restaurant. They’ve got all the things ladies love: shopping, make-up, purses, and drinks!

One last thing, but certainly not least. Downtown Phoenix is the new home for Phoenix Comicon. The largest comic convention in the Southwest. Thursday through Sunday, fans can meet their favorite creators like Stan Lee, dress and act like their favorite characters, get up close to their favorite Sci-Fi writers and actors, and participate in some wildly fun events like a masquerade ball, live bands, and great late -night parties. One event, in particular, will have you screaming with terror. The Zombie Walk, hosted by Arizona Ghostbusters, ( they have the car!) and your favorite Zombie Ambassadors, followed by  the Zombie Beauty Pageant. Zombies are encouraged to meet at the corner of 2nd St and Monroe at 6:30 p.m., with the walk starting promptly at 7 p.m., and ending at the Hyatt Regency. Walk is free, pageant is ticketed. Come out for a ghoulish good time.

Hope that you find something fun this weekend, and I will see you all at the Zombie Walk. Have fun, and be safe!

Honor One of Your Favorite Parents

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

You and I get 364 days a year. Mom gets one. In short, the odds aren’t stacked in mom’s favor.

Mothers-DaySo on behalf of moms everywhere, I’d like to suggest giving her the one thing she wants most on Mother’s Day: some time and attention.  You’ll find lots of options in Downtown Phoenix that will get her way more jazzed than that card you have your eye on.

Now, go clean your room and wash behind your ears. You have till the count of three.

For Boomer Moms

If your mom grew up with the sounds of the British Invasion, here’s the perfect event. Sunday at 2 p.m., the Phoenix Symphony Pops Series presents “The Beatles & Friends: Sounds of the 60’s.”  Besides the Fab Four, the concert will include music from the Beach Boys and the Mamas & The Papas.

Paging Heidi Klum

Fashionista moms should love “Catwalk,” a new production by Scorpius Dance Theatre. Fusing funky local fashions, athleticism and hot choreography, the show is staged on a runway. The last performance is Mother’s Day at Phoenix Theatre’s Little Theatre.

Because She’s a Good Sport

Take her out to the ballgame. Sunday’s showdown at Chase Field between the Diamondbacks and the Milwaukee Brewers starts at 1:10 pm, and all moms will get a Mother’s Day D-signer Tote Bag.

Mom Earned That Mimosa

The Mother’s Day Brunch has become an American tradition, and who are we to argue? To quote The Simpsons, “It’s not quite breakfast, it’s not quite lunch, but it comes with a slice of cantaloupe at the end.”

Kincaid’s is offering a yummy brunch on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Steve’s Greenhouse Grill will feature a made-to-order omelet and Belgian waffle station. For a fabulous view coupled with a lavish buffet, make reservations at the Compass Grill atop the Hyatt Regency.

Happy Mother’s Day, everyone.

Phoenix Symphony Gets the Led Out

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Mila Kunis, Olivia Wilde, Megan Fox and Jessica Alba are regulars on Maxim Magazine’s Hot 100 lists.

Pfft. You can have ‘em.

uha_music_of_led_zeppelin_4x3_300x225After attending Friday evening’s The Music of Led Zeppelin and Queen show at Dodge Theatre, I have begun an aggressive campaign to get electric violinist Allegra named to the No. 1 spot in 2010.

Allegra–with the help of vocalist Randy Jackson, bassist Dan Clemons, guitarist George Cintron, drummer Powell Randolph, conductor and show mastermind Brent Havens and the pride of Downtown Phoenix, the Phoenix Symphony–paid homage to history’s definitive heavy metal band, Led Zeppelin, and somehow managed to make this die-hard fan appreciate the depth and sexiness of the band’s catalog even more.

Allegra wasn’t the only thing burning up the stage. Renditions of “Kashmir,” “Heartbreaker,” “Thank You” and “Since I’ve Been Loving You,” showcased the profound skills of Cintron, while Jackson made “All of My Love” and “Stairway to Heaven,” two Zeppelin songs I generally go out of my way to avoid, not only palatable but downright enjoyable. Special shout-out to Randolph for his jaw-dropping work on “Moby Dick.” Late Zeppelin drummer John Bonham would have beamed with pride.

The only complaint I had was the absence of “Living Loving Maid” from the set list. It’s a song that should always be married to ”Heartbreaker,” just as on Led Zeppelin II.

If you doubt the objectivity of an admitted Zeppelin wonk, I’ll relay a brief review from my 23-year-old niece, Alicia, who accompanied me to the show despite having zero little knowledge of Zeppelin or Queen going in.

“That,” Alicia said as we exited the Dodge. “Was amazing. You could set anything** to an orchestra and I’d go see it.”

I’m more classic rock than classical but the excellence in execution exhibited by the Symphony made me want to grab tickets for “Peter and the Wolf” pronto. What an amazing ensemble of talent. And Havens deserves kudos for his score. At no time did the orchestral treatments mess with the integrity of the songs.

Same goes for the opening act, The Music of Queen, performed by the same band but with Las Vegas bar scene rocker Brody Dolyniuk channeling the voice and showmanship of Freddie Mercury. Dolyniuk’s stage antics were a little ham-ish (so were Mercury’s), but there’s no doubting the dude can sing, especially after hearing him tackle “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Stone Cold Crazy.” Next time I’m in Sin City I’ll definitely look up his classic rock tribute band, Yellow Brick Road.

And I’ll be sure to attend The Music of Led Zeppelin and Queen whenever it comes back to the Valley.

**Creed and Nickelback are obvious exceptions to this statement.
