Are You Ready for Some Football?

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Finally, football is back and Downtown Phoenix is the place to cheer for your favorite college (Go Devils!) and pro (Go Cardinals!) teams.

Ready? Set? Then take a short hike to one of Downtown’s great sports bars for football, food and fun with friends.

sports barCoach & Willie’s

Winner of  the Phoenix New Times’ Best Downtown Sports Bar in 2009 and 2010, Coach & Willie’s has been a mainstay for Downtown sports fans since opening in 2000. C&W offers plenty of indoor/outdoor seating, a wide array of TVs, and a stellar hangover menu featuring “The Kitchen Sink,” a mixture of eggs, potatoes, ham, bacon, red onions, green chilies, tomato, avocado, and cheese that is baked and served with toast or English muffin ($7).

Majerle’s

Don’t let this restaurant’s name trick you into thinking it’s only a basketball bar. Since 1992, former Phoenix Suns guard “Thunder” Dan Majerle’s sports bar and restaurant has been a headquarters for sports fans in search of cold drinks and hot wings. And if you head to Majerle’s for Monday Night Football you’ll be rewarded with $5 martinis!

The Rose & Crown

This Heritage Square pub caters to futball fans and football fans alike and on NFL Sundays offers a $3 breakfast from 10 a.m. to noon. This Sunday you can join the Rose & Crown lads for their Annual Pig Skin Pig Roast, with all you can eat pork, bag toss, horseshoes, drink specials, and televisions out on the porch.

Alice Cooper’stown

If you’re headed to the Diamondbacks/Padres game this Sunday make a pit stop at Cooper’stown to check the progress of your fantasy teams. While you’re there, take on the “Man vs Food”-approved Bases Loaded Big Unit, a full pound 22-inch Vienna beef hot dog loaded with chili, bacon, jalapenos, tomatos, kraut, sweet relish, cheese and a pile of French fries.

Hooters

Not only can you get great wings and cold beer at this scenery rich Arizona Center sports bar but on Sundays kids eat free!

Tilted Kilt Pub and Eatery

Downtown’s newest sports bar and grill, CityScape’s Tilted Kilt, is the place where a cold beer never looked so good. In addition to the lovely Tilt Girls, the Kilt is a sports geek’s dream with dozens of TVs, a patio that looks out at US Airways Center and Chase Field, and a mouth-watering menu of burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, Irish stew, fish n’ chips, and TK’s signature wings.

Networks

Huddle up around Networks large bar and cheer for your favorite teams over mouth-watering burgers and thirst-quenching cocktails.

Friday’s Front Row

Friday’s Front Row isn’t just for baseball fans. Get all of your TGIF favorites, including Cajun Chicken & Shrimp Pasta, Tornado Nachos, and Jack Daniel’s Grill shrimp, chicken and ribs.

So, are you ready for some football?

Zombies to Roam Streets Friday

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

What’s green, blue, red, and tastes funny?

A zombie eating a clown.

This Friday, Oct. 29, citizens of the undead are invited to line up at Heritage Square at 6 p.m. dressed as their favorite brain-craving Zombie for Zombie Walk 2: Bigger! Better! Undead…er.Zombie Walk 2

The Downtown Ambassadors , Arizona Ghostbusters and Broken Bulb Studios (makers of the hit Facebook video game Braaains!) invite you to attend this FREE, family friendly celebration which begins at promptly 6:30 p.m. and will circle back to the park in time for the All Hallows Eve Festival running 5-11 p.m. The All Hallows Eve Festival will feature candle-lit tours of Rosson House, pumpkin carving and decorating, children’s costume contests, face painting, palm readers, cake walk, jump house, silent horror films, gift basket raffle, carnival games, live music, food vendors, fresh brains** and a cornucopia of spooky peeps.

Anyone who would like to have their zombie makeup done by professionals, come down to Heritage Square at 4 and be made undead for as little as $10.

NightmareCROPPEDClaybirdsIf that’s not enough to satisfy your ghoulish cravings, the The Rose & Crown will host A Nightmare on Adams Street with beer garden operating from 7:30 p.m. to Midnight. Admission to A Nightmare on Adams Street is free and the music will be abundant, featuring bands from 7:30-9 (Claybirds have already signed on) then DJ LaRue will provide the soundtrack from 9-12. There will also be a costume contest with prizes and a scary movie (we suggest something by Sam Raimi).

If you’re into Halloween make plans to attend these wickedly fun events in Downtown Phoenix.

And if you want to see just how much the Ambassadors like Zombies, check out these great photos on Facebook and Flickr.

Change Is In the Air

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Here it is, the moment we’ve all waited for: the first double-digit temps. Feel free to abandon the a/c and head outside to enjoy Downtown’s balmy fall nights.

Start with drinks at the newly opened ReBar on Roosevelt, which has a big outdoor patio and a nice vibe for relaxing with friends.

Rose&CrownWEBOther options include The Rose and Crown, where you can sip a Guinness on the always-popular porch or lawn; Steve’s Greenhouse Grill, where the misters keep you extra-comfortable; and Seamus McCaffrey’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, which has patio seating and a Publican who really knows his liquor. Ask him to recommend something from the pub’s big selection of draught beer and Irish whisky.

Where can you go from there? Head to Coach & Willie’s for wood-fired pizza on the inviting patio, complete with waterfall, or relax outside at Majerle’s and munch on classic American fare.

Of course, as you probably know, one of Downtown’s most eye-catching outdoor settings is the Arizona Center. Both Sam’s Café and My Big Fat Greek Restaurant face the Center’s gorgeous gardens, water features and cozy benches for canoodling.

Want more that’s outdoor? Sip a White Mocha coffee on the patio at Fair Trade Café, then walk a few steps to Civic Space Park and its green lawns. Relax under the stars while you feel sorry – just briefly –  for the rest of the country, which will soon be dealing with rain and snow.

It’s good to be a Phoenician.

Showcasing Creativity: New First Fridays Event

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

More and more, youthful energy and ideas are reshaping Downtown Phoenix. Sean Deckert, an ASU student and artist, is the latest proof that our city is ripe for creative input and change.

Just one year ago, Sean moved Downtown and was juggling his studies with a bartending gig at The Rose and Crown. Today, he’s co-curator of First Fridays in Heritage Square, a juried exhibit that features up-and-coming young artists. Recently, we talked with him about his journey from student to arts entrepreneur.

Sean_DeckertQ: How did you get involved in promoting the arts?

“In the beginning, I was just looking for a space to display my own art. Since I was working at The Rose and Crown, I realized that Heritage Square was a cool spot that no one was utilizing. Then, I thought: maybe I can get more artists involved, and it grew from there.”

Q: What’s different about your First Fridays event?

“It’s not a street fest. There are no vendors, just artists, so it’s a less crowded space and the atmosphere is amazing. The artists set up, hang out and talk to the public about their work and their methods. In fact, we encourage people to talk to the artists and learn about their work.”

Q: How do you choose the artists for each show?

“Initially, I sent a call out to artists all over the Valley. Our first show was in September of ‘09, and we now have certain artists who continually exhibit, like Jacki Orr, a video artist, Lee Davis, who does woodblock prints and acrylic painting, and Gabe Sandoval, an aerosol artist who paints portraits. Gabe is a highlight of each show: he places a four-foot square panel board on an easel and spray paints live. By the end of the event, he’ll have a finished piece.”

Q: Are you still looking for artists to exhibit?

“Absolutely. Anyone who’d like to show his or her work can contact me at seandinaz@gmail.com. We’re looking for work that makes a strong statement.”

Q: How is The Shizz involved? And what the heck is it?

“The Shizz is a music blogspot that promotes local bands. For this month’s First Fridays event, The Shizz will present two live bands, Whisperlights and Former Friends of Young Americans. If you’d like to find out more about local bands, visit theshizz.org.”

Sponsored by Artlink, the Rosson House Foundation and the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation, First Fridays at Heritage Square takes place this Friday, Feb. 5 from 6-10 p.m. If you’d like to see some of Sean’s work, check out his upcoming show at the Ice House, Feb. 27 and 28, which features his fine art photography and the paintings of Taylor Swick.
