CityScape Tenants Announce Opening Dates

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

November is a big, whopping, super-sized month in Downtown Phoenix. Whether you’re a CityScape watcher or just someone who eats and wears clothes (hopefully at the same time), here’s a juicy update. Three new clothing retailers and a groundbreaking restaurant are opening their doors at CityScape this month.

Check out the line-up, with projected opening dates:

urban_outfittersUrban Outfitters – Scheduled to open on Thursday, November 4th, Urban Outfitters started its retail life as “The Free People’s Store” in 1970 Philadelphia. It’s now part of a company that trades on NASDAQ, which would probably shock the store’s original shoppers. Chances are, you already know that Urban Outfitters is a great spot to find hip, vintage apparel and merchandise, along with luxury brands.

Charming Charlie – Keep your fingers crossed, Downtowners. Charming Charlie, a slice of nirvana for any woman who loves fashion accessories, is planning to open on November 4th, too. As someone who can’t resist earrings, bracelets, bags and belts, I’ve been waiting for this boutique to get up and running. Their items are incredibly affordable, ranging from about $5 to about $50, which simply means: we can all buy more.

Aaron-MayRepublic of Couture – Want to be sure no one else will be wearing your favorite threads?  Then this is your spot. Only 6 to 10 pieces per style are available in-store, so you’ll feel like you’re wearing one-of-a-kind clothes. Plus, the constant turnover means you’ll find something new every time you shop at R.O.C. This fashion-forward boutique offers women’s, children’s, and yes, men’s clothing.  Their eclectic mix of upscale brands includes Joe’s Jeans, True Religion, Ed Hardy, Hugo Boss and Sky. The scheduled opening date is November 4th.

Vitamin T – Foodies, start your engines. Chef-restaurateur Aaron May is opening an ode to Mexican street food, known as comidas corridas. Slated to open on November 12th, this small, authentic restaurant will offer street food basics like tacos, tamales and tortas with one big difference: May uses free-range chicken and grass-fed beef. Yum. Geared toward take-out, Vitamin T will feature an open kitchen, salsa bar and drink station. The joyous color palette is meant to echo the work of Luis Barragan, one of Mexico’s most notable architects.

Downtown Phoenix Partnership Hosts Stakeholder Forum

Monday, July 5th, 2010

On June 29 the Downtown Phoenix Partnership hosted a stakeholder forum at the Downtown Sports Grill in the Collier Center.

pro-skylineThe lunchtime event brought together building representatives and security personnel and featured a presentation by Dave Roderique, President & CEO, and Terry Madeksza, Vice-President of Operations, detailing the organization’s current efforts to improve the Downtown experience.

The Partnership is coordinating the installation of a comprehensive wayfinding system, including both pedestrian and vehicular signage.  The installation marks the culmination of an extensive design process and is sure to make traveling Downtown much easier.  Along with wayfinding, the Partnership is engaged in various other streetscape improvement projects including new LED uplights, rehabilitating irrigation and electrical systems and painting the trashcans and benches silver.  The presentation also included comments from Lt. Jeff Lazelle of the Phoenix Police Downtown Operations Unit, who highlighted the low crime rate and efforts to curb panhandling and property crimes.

Dave Roderique updated the group on the progress of several major Downtown projects, including the Health Science Education Building, the County Court Tower and the Freeport McMoRan/Westin Center.  On the verge of the biggest retail investment in Downtown Phoenix history, the area will soon welcome a CVS Pharmacy, Lucky Strike Bowling Lanes, Oakville Grocery, Urban Outfitters and more than 12 new restaurants when the retail portion of CityScape opens this fall.  Already more than 80 percent of the office space has been leased and Gold’s Gym has opened for business.  The latter half of 2010 promises more excitement as restaurants and businesses open and the pedestrian environment is enhanced.

CityScape Update

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

When folks learn that I work for Downtown Phoenix one of three questions follows without exception:

1) What’s with the glowing uterus in Civic Space Park? *

2) Can you get me free tickets to [fill in the blank]? **

3) When does CityScape open?

Let’s address that third question now.

08 0817 office night view overall with signageWEBIn case the aggressive construction has eluded you, CityScape is a pretty big deal, both in size and its significance to Downtown. The mixed-use complex covers two lineal blocks in the heart of Downtown Phoenix and combines residential, office, retail, entertainment and public space with the total area of over 1,000,000 square feet.

As for when CityScape “opens,” the updated schedule is looking like this:

APRIL: Firms will soon be moving into the office tower at Central Avenue and Washington. Also, the construction team will complete an 80-foot long elevated pedestrian bridge crossing above Central and connecting to the new Patriots Square Park and CityScape’s retail by month’s end.

MAY: Gold’s Gym to open.

JUNE: Landscaping of Patriots Square Park to be completed.

JULY: Opening of hipster-friendly Urban Outfitters and Lucky Strike Bowling, plus Designer District, CVS pharmacy, Republic of Couture and Press Coffee.

SEPTEMBER: Oakville Grocery to open.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER: Chef Aaron May to open a noodle bar and small Taqueria, La Grande Orange owners to open Public House, plus The Breakfast Club and a Sam Fox chop house to make debuts.

2011: BluBurger Grille and Cherry on Top yogurt to open.

Late 2011: 240-room Palomar hotel to open.
